all that needs to be said about the issue of how wrong the death penalty is...

why do we allow them a last meal? what faculty of humanity are we appealing to when we grant death row inmates this? what possible reason can there be to waste food in such an obvious way?

if I was to be executed I would ask to have the president shoot me in the head on tv. I wonder if they would accept.

@moe
It's expensive because of all these rules and precautions. If we treated it such as criminal case, it would cost the same or less.

"It's terrifying and disheartening when a government has the right to kill its people."

Please name one government that doesn't kill it's own people for one reason or another. Of all the reasons governments use to kill, this is the one reason that I'm OK with.

I say it's terrifying to let a person live who kills innocent people without batting an eye. What would you rather we do with murderers? And firing squad is a thousand times cheaper than life in prison, you can quote me on that.

moe, in some cases yes. But a bullet is cheap.
____________

How can you call this barbaric if he asked for it to be done?

He wanted to die this way because that's how his victim died.

Personally I salute him for the choice. It was a poetic one.

And for anyone still on this whole "the taxpayers shouldn't have to support a murderer while he serves life in prison" kick, capital punishment is much, much more expensive than a life sentence.

"What religion are you thinking of?? And how would death by firing squad even apply to that??"

Um - blood spills when you got shot? Unless they're ALL loading blanks (which clearly wasn't the case).. and it doesn't sound like that outlandish of an association considering some of the more wacky things Morman adherents subscribe to.

"... that is what he chose. As it is not an option now, he will be the last one."

Um, no - the article clearly states (and I've read it before elsewhere) that of the 9 convicted before 2004 (and therefore still have their choice), 4 of them will opt for this. That sounds to me like they're still alive, and still in a position to choose, which would not make him the last one (unless they all chicken-out).

No one is advocating a 'slap on the wrist' for criminals, thats how you would like to portray a more civilised method, but try being incarcerated for some time and see how easy it is!
Many people I know have committed offenses like myself and yet I am not a hardened criminal with the intent to murder and rape, and as much as you would like to have others believe not all criminals are monsters sometimes people act in an impulsive way and there are serious consequences to their actions.
What you should do is go and do a bit of studying you clearly know very little about criminality study a little psychology then some sociology and also some criminology then maybe go actually work with criminlas like I do then maybe work with victims like I do too and maybe you will be a little better informed.
By the way my crime! speeding acted impulsively to get somewhere quicker than I needed to!

@Alturu are you really that stupid?
Do you honestly think I'm advocating sending the criminals out to fast food outlets to work!? bizarre.

As for the financial arguement make them work for their keep whilst incarcerated

Make them work WHERE, exactly?

There are MILLIONS of good, honest citizens who've followed the laws and kept themselves under control all their lives, maybe even getting higher education and such, that can't find a job in a damn fast-food restaurant right now and you're advocating giving the jobs to criminals?

criminals are humans with a little less self control and many many studies have shown it doesnt take much for the average citizen to go down that route.

Oh? So drug dealers, gang members, and others that commit the crime deliberately just "have less impulse control," so we're supposed to keep them alive in the hopes that they'll just stop doing bad things with a little slap on the wrist?

And how many "average" people do you know that have gone down that route?

Dax, not only did death by firing squad have nothing to do with the Mormons, but that is the strangest thing I have ever heard! What religion are you thinking of?? And how would death by firing squad even apply to that??

The reason he was killed by firing squad was that it was still an option back when he was convicted, and that is what he chose. As it is not an option now, he will be the last one.

Forgive me if someone has already mentioned this, but it is my understanding that Utah kept the firing squad for so long because their population is very heavily Morman, and in Mormonism shedding your blood after you have killed someone offers a measure of forgiveness from God. Could a Mormon out there please tell me if I'm full of crap, or, if not, explain the concept more fully?

@Alturu you can argue and fight it all you want but criminals are humans with a little less self control and many many studies have shown it doesnt take much for the average citizen to go down that route.
I understand your need to distance yourself from these people it makes it easier to justify murdering them as monsters rather than human beings gone wrong.

As for the financial arguement make them work for their keep whilst incarcerated, tax payers not wanting to pay the bill is an awful excuse for state sponsored murder.

"only 6/10ths of 1% of murderers are executed"

Hmmm, I'm thinking 100% of their victims were.. Maybe we should bring the number of executions up.

@Max_Normal

Maybe, but you also have one F*CKED UP history full of much worse things.

I'd avoid doing committing crimes too if I thought it could start the next Inquisition or French Revolution...

Not only that, but the US is still, historically speaking, VERY young in the world, and at this age, most of your civilizations had kings and queens and all that.

There's a LOT of problems that need to be solved, though, I'll admit...

Funny really, we have far, far less crime in Europe yet no death penalty deterrent exists or is needed, so I guess there's a problem somewhere else that's not being adressed. (Can you spot what it is kids?).
