Sunday, June 06, 2010 6:41:26 AM "It would be nice to have a somewhat relevant explanation for some of these pics. Like, I wonder what kind of fish that is, and why do they all look dead?" The big one is a blobfish, Psychrolutes marcidus, a deep (really deep) sea fish. So are the other two, but I'm not sure what species they are. Because they live so deep, where the water pressure is about a dozen atmospheres, they can't survive at the surface (the density of their bodies is less than that of water, which is how they survive that deep). Many deep-water fish that have been brought rapidly to the surface usually swell and bloat, which explain s some of these fish' appearances. Although the blobfish is just plain ugly. It's not dangerous though, it lives of floating living matter at the sea bottom, kind of like a deep sea Roomba. Good enough explanation? |
