Wednesday, June 02, 2010 6:57:22 PM @catbarf: I feel that yes, the dogs likely have little (to no) idea what they're actually doing, or how dangerous it is, but it's because of that particular reason that I personally feel the dogs very much deserve any honor they receive. We risked and sacrificed *their* lives, for our own needs, and out of love and feelings of companionship with us, they do as they're told, blindly. We lead them straight into death and danger. For what we made them give, I think they deserve a little something. And as I said, they do it out of trust and love. (And just for the record, my husband is a solider. Little can be said for the "honor" he supposedly deserves for what the Army has him do. At least, at this point in time, anyway.) |

Tuesday, June 01, 2010 3:07:02 AM Angilion - Damn, history is history and people should be able to see past the negative racial connotations. Let the dogs name be used in the film. Really, I think the dogs full name should be on this stone too. Sure, I would probably giggle that the dog was named I am a racist! (And I bet that censors... THANKS IAB FILTER) and that they had put it on the memorial, but it was the dogs name and that was what he was called. Why should a negative connotation attached to that word make us censor a little bit of history (namely, the dogs actual name)? Yeah nah. End rage. |

Monday, May 31, 2010 10:28:40 PM [quote">Am I the only one that saw "Nig" on this. WTF?[/quote"> Probably from a while back, likely WW2 era. A film about WW2 recently had a bit of a dilemma because everyone knew that in reality the dog's name was the word that IAB's moronic censorship filter won't allow in any context. So what could they do in the film? Ah, here we are: Dambusters - the dog was called WHAT? |

Monday, May 31, 2010 10:07:59 PM You have to admit though, if Semper Fidelis applies to anything, it would have to be those dogs. |

Monday, May 31, 2010 8:11:35 PM I love the emotion this is supposed to invoke, when the dog in the picture just wants to play fetch and chew his own ass for hours on end. I agree w/ catbarf. |

Monday, May 31, 2010 6:45:18 PM "when it's done properly the dogs understand in their own way." In what way? It's a dog. It does not understand the beliefs, dogma, or country for which it fights. It can not comprehend the danger it is being sent into. At the end of the day a dog goes into battle not because of loyalty to its country, but out of blind, instinctual loyalty to its pack. Honor that personal loyalty, but don't put it on the same level as a willing, knowing sacrifice made by a soldier. |

Monday, May 31, 2010 2:58:09 PM The inscription should read: "They bravely and unwittingly gave their lives in complete ignorance that they were following some dogma that belonged to a completely different but more warlike and exploitational species". The complete ignorance is yours. Dogs and humans have lived in combined packs for millenia and when it's done properly the dogs understand in their own way. They won't understand or care about countries or politics, but they will understand and care about their pack and that's what matters to them. It's not greatly different to the connection between human soldiers in the unit, just simpler. Purer, perhaps. The soldiers who work with dogs should understand the key thing about doing so - loyalty goes both ways. The person is pack leader to the dog, so the person serves the dog. You own them therefore you owe them. It's much better than treating a dog as an animated dress-up dolly, as many do.
