1. Yellow and purple are complementary colours (they are opposite each other on the colour scheme).
2. There's a shadow effect both on the balls and around them, making it seem like they are round and they are in indentations.
Both these things make your eyes keep having to re-adjust to the picture whenever you shift them slightly. Which explains why they stop when you stare intently at one spot. |

Is it an afterimage thing? If you stay motionless and don't shift eye focus, the effect slows and stops. |

What Batmanners said. Technically, a GIF is just an image format that can have more than one image, which can be displayed in sequential order. But until BMP and Optimized JPG became widely available, the most common use of GIFs was non-animated single pictures for the web, because it provided the smallest filesize back then.

Not wrong, but also not true. .GIF is a format that allows for animation, but because it can doesn't mean it is. See you could save that exact file as a .gif, from that .jpg above and it would still work AND not be an animation. |
