Friday, May 14, 2010 4:46:48 PM They stop being a private organization when they receive tax payer generated government funding, auburnjunky. So no, they can't exclude whoever they want. |

Friday, May 14, 2010 7:02:28 AM @yaezakura: "Frankly, I don't approve of my taxes going to an organization that would exclude my children because they don't believe in god or happened to be gay." Luckily your taxes don't go to them, because they are a private entity. The being said, that they are private and all, they can let whomever they want join. |

Thursday, May 13, 2010 6:44:59 PM but they care NOT of your religious views Demonstrably false. And it has been done. Penn & Teller wrote letters to several scout leaders, posing as a family who wanted their son to join the Scouts, but were worried because their son was an atheist. They received several replies that said things like "a spiritual component is essential to a moral life" and "The Scout Code mentions duty to God above nation, others, and self". In other words, these scout leaders, many of them high ranking officials of the organization, were saying "don't bother joining if you don't believe in God". Now, it's true they also received many nice replies from leaders at the local level that said it wouldn't be an issue. However, the organization is now essentially run by the Mormon Church, and if the higher-ups find someone may be an atheist, they will move to kick them out, be they leader or even a child scout. |

Thursday, May 13, 2010 5:31:37 PM "and atheists" I'm tired of hearing this. they may ask some of the adults their sexual orientation (though I was an assistant scoutmaster and was never questioned), but they care NOT of your religious views. we had muslims, jews, and myself (an openly agnostic person) as well as atheists. the only thing I did different was I neglected to finish the Scout Oath (and reverent), its not like I preached to the troop how they should turn away from god (cue the devil horns). trust me, they care more about how you are as a person than your political, religious, or sexual views; then again they WILL protect the younger kids from pedophiles, its just like girl scouts won't let male leaders be alone with girls (SCANDAL SCANDAL!!!!!!) |

Thursday, May 13, 2010 4:48:03 PM The reason why I feel that way, tomaj, is because I don't list discrimination as a "value" to be taught to my children. (Not that I have kids, but if I did.) The BSA discriminates against homosexuals and atheists. They claim the right for this exclusion because they are a "private organization", except they're not; they receive annual government funding generated by American tax payers. Sounds to me like the BSA is a bunch of BS. |

Thursday, May 13, 2010 2:28:24 PM Lionhart i guess i was just very lucky. All of my leaders had been involved in scouting since they were kids, they had families and most had a boy in the troop. That being said i did notice quite a few mysterious looking few while at camp |

Thursday, May 13, 2010 9:32:05 AM I knew this was where it was going. I had a kid hold a bow and arrow backwards the other day. Another one couldn't hop a 5' tall chain link fence. |

Thursday, May 13, 2010 8:17:17 AM Now if they'd allow sewing and feng shui merit pins we'd be making some progress. |

Thursday, May 13, 2010 6:46:25 AM "Choose a game you might like to purchase. Compare the price for this game at three different stores. Decide which store has the best deal." Obviously the people who came up with these rules never shopped for video games. ---'well, best buy sells the game I want for 59.99, while walmart has it on sale for only 59.97.' |

Thursday, May 13, 2010 12:15:44 AM Is that because they don't let homosexuals be adult leaders? If that's the case, it's not illegal. The exclusion of homosexuals and atheists both as scout leaders and as children is certainly where the bigot part comes in. The law-breaking part is that, as a "religious organization", they should not be allowed to receive public funding. Which they do. By the truckload. In direct violation of the law. Frankly, I don't approve of my taxes going to an organization that would exclude my children because they don't believe in god or happened to be gay. |

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 10:27:43 PM > xKrazyKoalax > what in the world are you basing this on. Wise Old Fart world wisdom, a lifetime of reading newspapers, and a Degree in the University of People Are Basically C*nts. ALL those organisations - Church Lads Brigade, Boys Brigade, Scouts, Venturers, etc - including their female equivalents - and Social Service Clubs such as Lions, Apex, etc - are struggling for members and shutting chapters down, as opposed to their heyday when EVERYONE was a member of one of them. Largely, its because of the reasons I gave there. I'm not saying it of BSA particularly. As previous Scouts, of course you feel obliged to defend against that POV. Scouting would have failed in everything it tried to teach you, if you didn't. BUT the world is a bad, bad place now, and those organisations will soon be gone forever. |

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 9:45:59 PM sorry, I was wrong. there were more mom's in the cub scouts, almost all the leaders were moms, but boy scouts was definitely almost all men. they may be dirty old men, but they're talking about women not boys. the ones you SHOULD worry about are the 18-21 year old girls (typically ex-girl scouts) who work at summer and winter camps, then again most people WANT their boys to be lusting after these girls |

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 9:37:06 PM "I think its fairly obvious. Psychologically speaking, apart from the actual pedophiles taking your kids away camping for a week, which hopefully are few in number, AT BEST the Leaders are a high proportion of social misfits, single men who wish they'd had kids or wives or lives, wannabe Hitlers who like bossing people around, or gun-toting Conspiracy Theory nutcases trying to teach your kids the "real" truth about the Government. Sure, there are probably some normal, nice individuals as well, but they would be in the minority." wow, where are you pulling this crap from? I was in BSA from 1988-2004, proud Eagle Scout, my scout leaders were, for the most part, married dads with kids in the troop. the few exceptions, my scoutmaster (great guy) was a 50 yr old who son had just turned 18, he'd been with the troop for 10 years prior, and 2 mom's |
