Addler? Thats what the Olympics are for! An Olympic gold medalist earns about $25000. According to WikiAnswers. NOT 5 million! RIGHT?
Going further....
Reading you responses It seems that is safe to say that you might be pretty smart and well educated guy. Now, tell me, what sporting events to you enjoy going to?

Wow, I can agree with yagovaggo on a few points, and disagree on others.. but come on, that is the most annoying emphasis i have ever seen. Every other word doesn't need to be capitalized T_T

Wait, so it is okay for musicians and film stars to make money that could be sent to teachers, but it is not okay for an athlete to make any money?

Furthermore, your elitist ideology fails to appreciate the virtues of the appreciation of kinetic genius, the ability to physically do what nobody else can, the stimulation of muscles in a manner that the normal, every day snob cannot. Much the same as the way a skilled pianist can stimulate their finger muscles to play music that the standard every day joe, such as yourself, cannot.

If you were to maintain any sort of cohesive stance, you either send all of the musicians, directors, actors and athletes to the poor house to pay for teachers, or you let them all thrive and produce their respective brands of genius, whether or not you comprehend them.

Who is DEMANDING? Smart educated people who go to the the opera or a play or somewhere else they can learn something? or stupid middle class idiots?! ITS mostly the latter!
Can you honestly picture a smarter more educated person wasting his/her time going to a game?
No.. they go to plays, and shows, and museums and spend time learning.. A MOVIE is a million times better that a sporting event.. because you can learn something from watching a movie. Even a concert because Music breeds emotion!
YOU LEARN NOTHING FROM GOING TO A SPORTING EVENT! EXCEPT maybe what a players new batting average is! Wohoo!! LOL! But NOO, its not a waste of time! And you know what? I think you know that it is but are too ashamed to admit it and thus you continue to argue!
And do u know why I use Caps and Exclamation points? Bcause they are THERE for me to USE! When am I supposed to use my exclamation point if not when Im expressing Excitement? S

I was being tongue-in-cheek but perhaps it didn't come across too well.

But maybe your right. People will think I'm a good person if I tell them I've been to Africa to make a 'real difference'.

to rebut yagovaggo....

to assume sports are a waste of time and money is to not understand the basic principal of supply and demand. If there wasn't such a high demand for entertaining (yes, entertaining is an opinion but at this point it is shared by enough people to be considered a relevant one) performances then there would not be any money to be made in that sector. Since there is also a limited supply (not everyone is gifted physically, just like not everyone is gifted mentally)then the income of the athletes grows.

Also, if everyone were to go into professions that purely help people survive, not thrive, then the world would be a rather bleak place, without any sort of viewer oriented "show"

Finally, using exclamation points, like shouting, does not serve to make you sound important.

maybe if THAT CHUNK of the worlds money DIDNT GO towards the SPORTs Athletes in the first place and towards EDUCATION the world might be a better place!

Well if you're going to look at it that way, there are so many other things you could be bashing on rather than sports. Like, the military. Dang, what a huge hole in our budget that could be going into helping people.

LOL>. SO far everyone who thinks they disagree with me really just doesnt understand what I am actually saying. Maybe because they are not capable! I don't know.
@ addler -Profession ball IS a great source of income! THAT IS THE PROBLEM! THAT is THE ARGUMENT!! And as far as then income going towards learning ctrs. maybe if THAT CHUNK of the worlds money DIDNT GO towards the SPORTs Athletes in the first place and towards EDUCATION the world might be a better place! Just like Religion. Sports teaches Team work and togetherness.. but it also seperates people and causes CONFLICT! I am talking on a broader scale. But unfortunately not too many people are able to see that way though. But who cares about a better world when we have basktball teams & football teams worry about! I am Talking about the WORLDS ECONOMY! A lot of it goes to SPORTS ATHLETES! And YOU are giving it to them!!!

Oh come on. lighten up, dude.
If you wanna get technical, you could be in haiti or iraq or africa or something helping out, rather than sitting at your computer b*tching about the world.
just sayin.

"most people who are sports fanatics ARE stupid."

THIS, OMFG someone who finally has it right! Don't get me wrong i like to bike, play soccer, and rugby but i absolutely can't get into watching them.

Every sports freak i know is a complete moron, has a poo job, and most didn't finish high school. I know there's exceptions but they're few and far between.

further disagreeing with yagovaggo....

saying sports do not increase quality of life is nearly (nearly, mind you) as dumb as saying sports fans are all crazy idiots. Indicators of quality of life, as defined by wikipedia, can be found in this sentence straight from the site itself "standard indicators of the quality of life include not only wealth and employment, but also the built environment, physical and mental health, education, recreation and leisure time, and social belonging."
Sports provide key contributions to physical and mental health (relaxation, stress release, order in our topsy-turvy world) and are a way that countless people worldwide spend their leisure time privately as well as socially.

To say that losing sports wouldn't have an impact on quality of life is basically admitting you dont know what quality of life really is.

furthermore, college athletics are an excellent income generator for many centers of higher learning.

I remember the happiest day in my life, I got a full bag of chips. It was great until a seagull pooped in it. I gave it to my friend's dog.

Der Djer, Im not saying that sports are worthless.. but PROFESSIONAL athletes are!!
Of course PLAYING sports are a great way to stay fit and relieve stress and have fun. BUT that is something anyone can do. Im talking about PAYING to WATCH someone else play a sport! You being a smart and educated guy... How many times have you paid to go to a sporting event?!?
SPORTS should ALWAYS be second to education!! You dont leave your job to play sports, do you?
If being a major league player didnt earn all that much money do you think anyone would become a major league player? Im just saying that the money that Pro players make can be used elsewhere! Like Teachers and or other underpaid professions!!! ALL the money spent in the WORLD of SPORTS is a waste of money!!!!!
Sports were ORIGINALLY created out of bordom! And there is way to much going on in the world today to be bored!!! And if you dont see that as insightful then you can throw your 3.5 gpa out the window!

yagovaggo: While I may not like sports and some of them I consider a waste of my time, they are not in any way stupid. It's something people can get into as a passion and it gives them goals. Not all athletes are stupid but they have their priorities set to training for the game sometimes.

My theory is you got picked last for dodgeball as a kid. Here's a bandaid with a kitten on it.

@yagovaggo- I'd respectfully like to disagree with your "insightful opinion." I enjoy watching sports because they are a release from reality, just like any other performance is. I can respect not liking sports; however, I take offense to the implication that sports fans are, as you say, "just plain dumb." Mainly because of the fact that I have never dropped below a 3.5 gpa and scored a 32 on the ACT. Please refrain from making generalizations just because someone likes something you don't.

Also, I would like to point out that sports are not worthless. They teach teamwork, promote fitness, and are enjoyable. They provide an outlet for people who may be feeling stressed or who want to get into shape without paying for expensive equipment.

Im sorry. I truly beg to differ. most people who are sports fanatics ARE stupid. the majority of sports fanatics are just plain dumb! They just are! I am sure "they" have done a study on that but just never made it public because its obvious what would happen then! Sports offer nothing to the world!! IF sports event were eliminated from the world, there would be no loss to our quality of life, but It would only leave more room for it to Improve.
THInk about it.. how many college athletes are only accepted to a college because they are good in a sport? They get help in their "education" so they can play a sport!!!! Imagine if they did have to worry about being GREAT at a sport.. they just might concentrate on actually getting a proper education and become someone that might make an actual difference in the world!! Does that make sense?
Most athletes(most,NOT ALL)are idiots!!
Only because they dont HAVE to be smart!!
you get it!?!

"Teachers, doctors and other people who actually deserve it will be paid more than athletes."

You can always count on people getting jealous of others who create a product that they cannot...
