Ok ok sorry girls. Bankai, ALL of them (Springer, Dr Phil, Maury, etc) start out as serious attempts to examine societal problems, but the viewing public LOVES to see how much stupider everyone else is than they are, and so as ratings go up, the sensational stories take over and the worse the better. Jerry Springer openly admits he gave up trying for quality; Maury still has about 1 show in 10 which deals with better issues than "you are/aren't the father", Oprah manages to at least fake sincerity about 99% more than Tyra Banks ever does, and Dr Phil is and always will be the dung-heap in terms of actually being sincere about the issues raised. As a genre, collectively, expect nothing and you will get your wish. |
