Many people in first-world countries can not or do not manage their diets well enough already. Replacing every high-nutrient meat with seven different plant products will not help matters. Even if it is possible to eat a balanced vegetarian diet, most people would fail.

Which is pretty much why I don't do it.

I was thinking on an individual basis though, not a worldwide basis. It's a sound choice for individuals who could do it right and have the resources to do it right. I agree that it isn't a sound choice for all people.

Although if it became more widespread it would become easier to do in wealthy countries because there would be a big market for food products to meet the demand for vegetarian food with a suitable variety of plant-sourced amino acids and wider knowledge of what's needed for a good vegetarian diet.

To me Peta is so weak that they're using gorgous naked women to make guys joins since guys don't normally care as much about animals as women do.

I hope I'm not sounding sexist somehow.

"Ironically, the cleanliness of modern food production stops whatever B12 you could get from plant sources."

Wow, so eating suspicious foods outside the subway is actually good for me? Yay. XD

"Why not? You acknowledge that it can be done healthily, so why do you think it isn't a sound choice? "

And in the majority of the rest of the world, the people do not have the luxury of variety. It's simply not an option.

"your an idiot on a message board"

Hey, maybe your mouthbreathing e-tard ranting would be more effective if you could actually differentiate between you're and your, capitalize every once in a while, and occasionally hit that little thing to the left of Q.

I imagine he/she is referring to B12, which can ONLY be obtained from meat and dairy products.

B12 is ultimately obtained from bacteria. Ironically, the cleanliness of modern food production stops whatever B12 you could get from plant sources. You can get enough B12 from some organic crops fertilised with animal dung in bacteria-laden soil. Yummy.

But yes, vegans should suppliment with a microgram or two of B12 daily.

Just because it's possible to eat healthily without meat does not make it a sound choice.

Why not? You acknowledge that it can be done healthily, so why do you think it isn't a sound choice?

As someone who's lived in several countries far poorer than ours, I can say that livestock is a staple.

As I said before:

Meat is an efficient source of nutrition, but it's only *necessary* if you only have access to a limited variety of plant food.

If, on the other hand, you have access to a wide variety of plant food transported in from all over the place, meat doesn't have to be a staple and isn't needed at all.

If you're living as a hunter-gatherer or a small-scale farmer living solely on locally grown food (especially if you're also poor), then you are going to need at least dairy products for a healthy diet.

Does that apply to anyone here?

Incidentally, why do you think humans have evolved such a high proportion of large flattened teeth, i.e. the type associated with eating plant matter?

We still retain incisors and bicuspids for a reason.

Your reply would be relevant if I was arguing that humans are adapted to being herbivores.

Since I'm not making that argument, your reply is avoiding the question.

I was replying to the argument that humans are physiologically geared to being pure carnivores.

My position is that humans are physiologically geared to being omnivores.

Can you answer the question I posed (to Baelzar, but this is a public forum so anyone is free to have a go)?

vegetarians are healthier b/c the protein we get is better for you.

Can you answer these related questions off the top of your head:

Which amino acids do you need to get from your diet?

What plant sources do you get them from?

Note the plural - no one source is anywhere near good enough. Unlike meat, which is a good source of all of them.

Any vegetarian who doesn't know the answers cannot make the assertion you make.

I've noticed that not one of the vegetarians posting in this thread is even mentioning amino acids. Some talk about protein, but that's only a part of the issue. You could get more than enough protein from plants and still be suffering from "protein" deficiency. It's the amino acids in the protein that matter, because that's what your body actually uses.

that has to be the most retarded, misguided thing i have ever heard. you know where the myth came from that we need meat for protein? the USDA. the same people that let the poultry industry redefine feces and chickens absorb 11% of fecal soup. USDA inspectors only have TWO SECONDS to examine each bird, checking about 25,000 a day. like they give a poo about your health. vegetarians are healthier b/c the protein we get is better for you. the ADA has acknowledged that. your an idiot on a message board, you think you know more than the ADA or the WHO? i dont normally give people crap for eating meat unless they act like tools and make up excuses. the only excuse is that you think it tastes good, so it's worth the bad health, the bad environmental effects, and animals being tortured and genetically manufactured to suffer MORE. people say vegetarians are the sentimentalists, but its people who eat meat that value what they feel over what's logical. factory farming is not SUSTAINABLE.

Typical PETA, using pussy to get attention. Most of the people who like these ads are VAGetarians, not VEGetarians. Yes, she's hot. I still think PETA should go f*ck off, though.

PETA is retarded. I get it, don't be bad to animals. But seriously, if elephants don't want to be in the circus, all they have to do is trample everyone. Simple as pie.

I imagine he/she is referring to B12, which can ONLY be obtained from meat and dairy products. It helps DNA synthesis during cell division, and a deficiency of it produces eczema, skin lesions and anemia - and guess what most Vegans we all know look like?

Even the most serious 'Veg Only' person should be at least eating eggs OR taking vitamin supplements specifically to make up for this absence.
