it's called the bystander effect. The more people around, the less likely it is that anyone will help.
@zekumi don't be so sure. you never know how you're going to react. they are regular people who are probably pretty decent in regular life.

I can say with 100% honestly that I would NEVER just walk past someone bleeding to death on the street.
Who does that? I mean, I could understand if they didn't see blood and assumed he was just sleeping or passed out, but good god.

I would've been nervous, but I would've called 911 and stayed there until someone showed up. You don't just leave someone dead or bleeding on the street.

If it happened in an isolated room, and the only two parties in there were you and the homeless guy, probably like 80% of us would gladly help the man. Sadly, when in a group, people are more apt to think, "eh, someone else will help 'im," and walk right on by, as seen here.

What happened to the woman that was being mugged? didn't she bother calling anyone?

It turns out she wasn't being mugged; she was having a fight with her boyfriend. He started smacking her around, and the homeless guy stepped in to help her. The boyfriend stabbed the homeless guy, and the girl and her boyfriend both left in different directions.

I would have called 911! I'm not just saying that. I was walking home with my sister one day and we saw a homeless guy passed out in an alley. We got a bottle of water and a snack from the store we were next to and it turned out he was dehydrated. We didn't leave him alone until he promised he was feeling better.

@Gortrok

"honestly...do you ask every 'passed out' bum that you see if they need help? i dont..."

Wow man, you must see a LOT of passed out bums to have developed that kinda attitude... :P

That's the point. We (as a western society) DO see a lot of bums passed out in the street/dealing drugs/jacking up etc... that's WHY we're so insensitive to it.

Its a generalisation, but TBH generalisations exist BECAUSE they are true. Just like stereotypes.

...and another thing...people would recognize him as being homeless and think one of two things:
1) It's a scam of some kind, and as soon as you try to help, you're going to get robbed by his buddy who might be hiding in the shadows
2) He's completely insane, and as soon as you try to help, he'll stab you in the face.

Chance are, 90% of you yokels would have done the same thing...just walked away. Humans have an instinct that tells them to ignore trouble...if there's trouble around, pretend we don't see it, and hopefully it will avoid us.

It's sad that there are only a few truly altruistic people in the world, but it's part of human survival. Myself, I would have done what I could to assist...I have before, and it almost got me in trouble a few times, but I'll continue to do so. One time, I was almost involved in a high risk take down involving about a dozen police, K9 units, and a gangbanger.

Please, how about collective responsibility of the nation? Homeless people die every day on the streets and are ignored by the rest of the nation.

Why would this case be any different? Noone saw him protect the woman and everyone assumed he was just another dead homeless person.

@Powderdd: Yep, you're right.

It's so sad though. =( I'm glad my mom taught me the importance of helping others and to being a good Samaritan. I know if I ever noticed this I wouldn't stand around, I'd at least call an ambulance for them. Never assume that "someone else will help them," you always have to take the initiative.
