Sunday, April 25, 2010 4:50:50 PM ::When the institution's values include an official policy of covering up paedophilia and helping the criminals avoid facing the consequences of their crimes - no thanks, I'll blame the institution AND the people.:: Those that are covering up are the very same less-than-savory types running things. It's not congregation member Joe Smith's fault. As far as he's concerned, he'd like something done about it as well. Blame him all you want though. I'm sure that having that in common with the Westboro Baptist Church doesn't bother you that much. |

Sunday, April 25, 2010 6:46:42 AM The typical child sex offender molests an average of 117 children, most of who do not report the offence. (National Institute of Mental Health, 1988). Bentovim and colleagues from London's Institute of Child Health identified 224 adult male victims of child sexual abuse whose childhood medical and social service records were available for review. They then searched arrest and prosecution records to determine their later criminal activity. Most of the subjects were 20 years old or older when the study was conducted. Twenty-six of the 224 sex abuse victims (12%) later committed sexual offenses, and in almost all cases their victims were also children. 12% of 117 is 14. 1 Pedophile potentially produces 14 more. These statistics were only based on those that were caught, The researchers believe only half are ever caught and convicted So the actual amount may be much more. |

Sunday, April 25, 2010 3:47:44 AM Lion, 93% is way high. I suggest you read the "results in brief" section of this report. Some notable quotes from it: "These studies varied in terms of their estimates of the percentages of such offenders who had been abused, from zero to 79 percent" "Respectively, about 7 percent and 26 percent of sexually abused children in these studies were found to be sex offenders as adults" "The two prospective studies concluded that the majority of victims of sexual abuse during childhood did not become sex offenders as adults" "the majority of retrospective studies concluded that most adult sex offenders against children did not report that they were sexually victimized as children" "childhood sexual victimization would probably not be sufficient to explain adult s |

Sunday, April 25, 2010 1:09:29 AM > dooflotchie > Abuse damages people. A small percentage of those damaged people are so badly damaged by it they become abusers themselves No, a LARGE percentage of victims become abusers... roughly 93%. |

Saturday, April 24, 2010 10:13:03 PM CrakrJak: "It's well known that people that were abused, Have a much higher tendency to become abusers themselves." Keegan31: "The vast majority of victims of abuse never go on to hurt others." But you see, you are both right. Abuse damages people. A small percentage of those damaged people are so badly damaged by it they become abusers themselves, thus making both of your statements correct. CandyClown: "All arguments aside, I really like the flash animation and graphic design in this video." Me too. It was simple but very eye-catching.

Saturday, April 24, 2010 7:25:49 PM @CrakrJak "It's well known that people that were abused, Have a much higher tendency to become abusers themselves." People often see the fact that a large percentage of pedophiles were victims of abuse as an indicator of this. However this is a misconception. The vast majority of victims of abuse never go on to hurt others. Please stop spreading this, as it is simply not true and could potentially hurt people who were already victims to begin with. |

Saturday, April 24, 2010 5:32:44 PM The Church isn't the only order that does this. If you were to go into corporations and world government.... Do not blame the institution and it's values just because it is run by less than favorable people. Blame the people. |

Saturday, April 24, 2010 4:55:27 PM The current pope put the image of the church ahead of the lives of children. Both those that had been abused and those that hadn't. This ex-hitler youth, ex chief-inquisitor should be tried for crimes against humanity. I was a catholic |

Saturday, April 24, 2010 4:06:29 PM I am not a religious person by any means. But this video made me really sad. Something that fills so many people's lives with hope and fulfillment, full of evil and wrong. No religion is above the government. IMHO |

Saturday, April 24, 2010 2:30:57 PM GoSuPaul "Maybe it's just the amount of access they have to these little boys as well as the amount of power they hold. It's easy to keep a kid quiet when you're an authority in his life of all things spiritual. 'Shh...God told me that you were special, little one.'" As the "Brother" (RC religious order) told my adolescent brother in seminary school "I had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mother - she said it was ok to do"... add perversion here. The Roman Catholic church is the Whore of Babylon, fornicating with the kings of the earth, drunk on the blood of the saints. "Hate" and "Distaste" are not strong enough for what I feel for the lot of them. (And I still have family that belongs.)

Saturday, April 24, 2010 1:54:40 PM The question no one seems to be asking is how the incidence of pedophelia in the church compares to pedophelia in the population at large. Without that, we can't tell whether this problem is mostly real or mostly media hype. The main problem isn't the paedophilia - obviously that IS a huge problem, but it's not the main one. The REAL problem is the Catholic Church's hand in covering up instances of abuse. They're helping criminals get away with their crimes. This from people who claim absolute moral authority. The policy of secrecy was promoted by a man who now claims to be God's representative on Earth. It's disgusting. |
