Oh, and if he ever wills himself to lactate, that's gonna be a deal-breaker.

God bless the The Mennansaince.

I need a real man! One who can stand up for himself, have basic auto/household repair knowledge, and doesn't make me feel like I am raising another 15 yr old girl.

Well, Ang the part of the article where they state that he willed himself to lactate and then willed the lactation to stop is difficult for me to imagine. Has he done any other willpower experiments that have had the same positive result? Does he have mental focus that is a little stronger than average?

It's not just one man. Documented examples go back to the 19th century.

Nobody disputes that various pathologies can result in a man lactating. Starvation, for example. That proves that the basic capability is there.

The question is whether or not a man without any of those pathologies can lactate. The key issue is the level of prolactin. Men produce it, just not usually in large enough amounts to enable lactation. Under some circumstances, men can produce enough. Is the will to do so combined with the feedback of suckling enough to do it? Maybe.

Niceguy: No freaking way...with all due respect I feel as if I need more evidence. It's an intriguing story, but I have doubts.

Men breastfeeding? Why do you consider it so implausible? Men and women are not as different as we're all conditioned to think and the basic equipment is in place.

It's not common, that's for sure, but there are documented examples and not just as a result of abnormal hormone levels caused by something being wrong.

boadicea, all your graphs show is that men must be better workers than women.

From an employer's point of view, that is the *tendency* the graphs show. It's a reflection of men tending to work longer hours and devote more of their life to work.

The biggest factor in the average difference in pay is the number of hours worked, both directly (work more hours, get more pay) and cumulatively (work more hours, more likely to get promoted).

Making mothers and fathers equal parents would remove most of the difference, but that would require a radical change in society including the removal of feminism (which of course opposes the idea because it would require mothers losing their preferential status over fathers).

Anyone who doesn't believe me should look at pay comparisons between childless men and childless women and then overall. See the difference?

I'm all for equal rights between the sexes! That's why I'll be the one breastfeeding my children (after I give birth to them from my penis of course)

I'll bite - what do you think that has to do with rights? Are you arguing that people who breastfeed should have more rights? Less rights? Either way, why do you think that?

And Angilion, you are the most full-of-yourself troll I've ever come across. You think only you are right, and anybody who disagrees is lying or pushing some sort of crazy agenda. If you were less of a freak, you'd be bearable. But you are so far up your own ass it's ridiculous.

Obviously, it really bothers you that you can't come up with a counter-argument to anything I've written.

I'm not going to waste my time trying to convert you to supporting sexual equality and you have no chance of converting me back to supporting sexism and hypocrisy (i.e. feminism). But hey, maybe arguing with each other might entertain some people and thus serve the purpose of this site. I'm just not that bored at the moment.

I think not.

I agree - you think not. You just follow your prejudice, which requires no thought.

If anyone else cares, I'll explain why your statement is rubbish that has been debunked repeatedly. There's no point explaining it to you - you have made yourself unthinking. It's an article of faith to you, despite being ridiculous and proven wrong.

Men CAN breastfeed btw so be careful with what you consider the right of a woman but not a man. Equality goes both ways you know...

"Breastfeeding is not a right, it's a biological ability- why that should determine rights between people is ridiculous."

That is exactly the point I was trying to make (glad you caught on :D )

People should have equal opportunity regardless of gender, race, or otherwise, but lets face it people there are going to be physical differences that all of the good intentions and "feminism" aren't going to do away with and that's just the way it is.

My biggest problem with any sort of advocacy group is not that they try to help the underdog but that they tend to emphasize the inequality they are trying to do away with and subsequently perpetuate it. "Feminism" should not be about women exclusively, but it should be about both sides of the gender equation and trying to level out the disparity between them. Of course, calling it after either sex is off to a bad start then...

I think this supposed reversion back to "old ways" of masculinity supposes that all men today are "soft" somehow. I dislike that there is some sort of inherent definition of masculinity; it's the same as drawing standards of femininity. It's just as unfair to men to try and move an entire gender back in time. And just because they supposedly will leave behind sexism, homophobia and racism doesn't mean this regression is healthy.

This kind of old-guard manliness is the stuff of guys not going to doctors, not seeking therapy, and repressing their feelings for fear of being seen as a "manboy", "dumb dad," or "metrosexual."

I don't understand why we need any archetypes on which we should base our identities; neither men nor women.

And why exactly is going back in time a good idea? Shouldn't we be looking forward to a better future?

What? 6 pack abs are hot. I like a guy with abs like that because it shows discipline and a healthy body.

Plus it's sexy as all hell.
