Transgender means someone that routinely ( not necessarily consistently ) transitions from one gender to another. Gender is one's outward reflection of the male-female gender -spectrum-

Transexual is someone who actually opts to go through an operation to change their gender to fit the female-male dichotomy.

Neither are offensive terms. Tranny could be because doesn't designate which is which.

'transexual' would work. It's simply an accurate statement using standard roots with their standard meanings.

Anyone have any suggestions for a term to replace transgender and 'tranny'. I am genuinely interested in what some other options would be!

p0l4r21, are you arguing that 'disable' has a substantially different meaning to 'disabled'?

They're the same word. Say, for example, a unit of soldiers is ordered to infiltrate enemy territory, attack an enemy airbase and disable the planes. After they have done so, the planes are disabled. 'disabled' is just the past tense, i.e. that the disabling has already happened.

Main Entry: disabled
Function: adjective
Date: 1633
: incapacitated by illness or injury; also : physically or mentally impaired in a way that substantially limits activity especially in relation to employment or education

Ok that is the accepted definition of disabled. Merriam Webster is the standard for american english.
Disable:
1 : to deprive of legal right, qualification, or capacity
2 : to make incapable or ineffective; especially : to deprive of physical, moral, or intellectual strength

That is disable.

Just because you think you should find the word 'transgender' offensive doesn't mean that "tranny" isn't harmful.

This is a simple cultural difference. Here in America, our wive's often make us hold their purse while they shop. This here is no different. Not condoned here in the US, but this guy is merely holding his wife's clothes as she works her tricks.

Heurex.

Angilion is correct. It goes against social norms.

He did not say this was a bad thing. He made a statement. A true one. Untwist your underwear and get over it.

(Additionally, if you incapacitate or cripple a tank you do not make it "just as good as the other tanks, just special in its own way".

You end it's common functions.

Disable:
1) To make unable or unfit; weaken or destroy the capability of; cripple; incapacitate.
2) To make legally incapable; disqualify.

As a possible explanation for this picture, maybe he's had two cups stuck on his body because he thinks doing so has some medicinal effect and he's using a bra he had to hand to help keep the cups stuck on.

"It goes against social norms." Big hairy deal, get over it. Frankly, the emotional and psychological distress that pre-operative transgendered folk experience also goes against social norms.

You're confusing an answer to a question with agreement. My mistake - I should have taken care to carefully explain the difference so that you wouldn't mix them up.

You can LOL all you like, Heureux, but it won't make you any less wrong. Didn't you learn that the last time?

You don't even know the difference between sex and gender, so why on earth are you talking as if you knew anything about the subject?

"It's not as bad as 'disabled' though. 'disabled' means 'made completely useless', 'broken beyond all functionality' . . ."

LOL squared. http://dictionary.reference.com /browse/disabled

1. crippled; injured; incapacitated. (dates to the 1600's)

Looking over the range of definitions, disabled covers a continuum of lack of function. It implies at least some degree of functionality, and so when people are describing something that is 100% non-functional, they have to use a modifier like 'completely' or 'utterly' before the word 'disabled'.

A good case can be easily made that T's seek to achieve "social norms" by aligning their physical body with their internal experience - since the social norms is male people have male genitals, female people have female genitals. People who experience themselves to be female but have male genitals have to change their bodies to attain the 'social norm', and vice versa.

Social norm is a lousy standard for mocking and deriding other people's lives anyways - since it is guaranteed that your life, Angilion, or anyone's, somehow violates something someone else considers to be the 'social norm'.

Lastly, "high level of ignorance" is not a topic you ought to bring to other people's attention, Angilion.

"I probably should find the word 'transgendered' offensive, because it shows a high level of ignorance. Gender is what *hasn't* changed. Sex is what has changed."

LOL. Sex: either the male or female division of a species Gender: sex

The two words are interchangeable when the concept being discussed the state of being male or female. Transgender: Appearing as, wishing to be considered as, or having undergone surgery to become a member of the opposite sex.

And per wikipedia "Transgender is the state of one's "gender identity" (self-identification as woman, man, neither or both) not matching one's "assigned sex" (identification by others as male, female or intersex based on physical/genetic sex)."

The word tranny is so effing offensive. This site has so many biological males in drag/transgendered women pictures...what -exactly- is so amusing about it?

It goes against social norms.

I probably should find the word 'transgendered' offensive, because it shows a high level of ignorance. Gender is what *hasn't* changed. Sex is what has changed. But I don't. I just find it odd that some people, even some transexuals, prefer the word 'transgendered' because they don't understand what it means and they've been told to prefer it.

It's not as bad as 'disabled' though. 'disabled' means 'made completely useless', 'broken beyond all functionality'. I'd be hard pressed to find a more insulting word. Yet many people prefer it because they've been told to and are remarkably ignorant.
