Monday, April 12, 2010 2:45:31 AM Nothing to knock you out, either. Done while you were awake. They did have some pain relief, sometimes, to some extent. Opiates have been in use for millenia (obtained from poppies). They were even used in medieval Britain and Europe (where medicine was particularly primitive). They had no idea why it worked, but they knew it did work. Other plants could also be used to induce unconsciousness and reduce pain. There are accounts of general anaethesia as early as the 13th century (Hugh de Lucca) and they say it was old knowledge then. Modern examination of the plants involved indicates that some of them could work for anaesthesia (e.g. henbane contains scopolamine). Poppy juice certainly can - it contains several powerful drugs, including morphine. |

Sunday, April 11, 2010 12:37:31 PM although i can see how it is perfectly reasonable to blow smoke up someones ass after they have drowned, that is a surefire way to bring someone back to life, some of those instruments, i think, are actually instruments of torture, yes? |

Sunday, April 11, 2010 6:08:33 AM And of course, we get USED TO modern medicine. My mom recently went through a knee operation and was complaining a lot about the post-op pain. I reminded her, 20 years ago, she'd be lame or dead now. |

Sunday, April 11, 2010 6:06:48 AM These things pre-date ME by a year or two admittedly, but... my early memory is our family doctor when I was about 3, sitting across the desk, an old man, chain smoking while he dealt with patients, and a bottle of whisky on his desk which he frequently gave the kids a sip of. Haha things in medicine have certainly changed! |

Sunday, April 11, 2010 4:33:56 AM "You should see the tools they use now, Cordless drill for knee and hip replacement, Vibrating saws to cut & shape bone" at least now they have general anaesthetic that WORKS and doesn't kill you... unless they get the dosage wrong... |

Sunday, April 11, 2010 4:32:09 AM "colonic electro therapy wand. It does exactly what it says on the tin." - wait, what? It's a butt plug that SHOCKS you? God, I'm glad I'm alive now rather than then... even now, I think I'd want general anaesthetic for almost any modern procecdure that's invasive... |
