Davy: Yes, health care is horrendously expensive in the US, but that's not due to a LACK of government ownership and control; it's BECAUSE of it.

Some things that make it so expensive are:

1) States mandate that policies cover all sorts of expensive stuff like in vitro fertilization, marriage counseling, "alternative medicine" quackery, drug rehab, and free or low-cost checkups and screening. Also, it's illegal to shop for a better deal across state lines.

2) Juries can award huge jackpots for punitive and non-monetary damages. Malpractice insurance can cost over $250k/yr. Doctors order unnecessary tests just to cover their asses.

3) Most services are paid by 3rd parties, so patients don't care what anything costs. "Sprained ankle? I want an MRI!"

4) Medicaid and Medicare pay only 70-80% of cost, so providers have to jack up the price to everybody else to make up for it.

Obamacare won't fix these problems.

No that's not true. Medical bills pile up, yes. Here's the thing.

Federal law says that medical bills cannot affect your credit. ALSO; medical bills, no matter the size, fall off your record after 7 years (like bankruptcy).

I agree that this is no way to live, but to say that with no health care that you will die/ not get help, is preposterous.

Here's a simple solution. Get a job with health care. If you don't/can't get a job with health care, get medicaid. If you are making too much money to get medicaid, cancel the cable, quit smoking, and go buy a personal policy. (I just saved someone 600$ a month! :))

@auburnjunky that may be true but they save the persons life, or try to in some cases, and the patient and or family members get slapped with a bill for it later. whether that money comes from a paycheck or other means, they still have to pay.

This too will fail. Just wait till all your parents retire and your tax rates fly through the roof. Social security is in trouble. Do you realize 48 percent of american pay no federal tax. That will change. This program will fail, it makes no sense. America is on the cusp of failure, tottering on the edge. When we go down, so will the world. Yeah China even more so.

You guys finally figured out why Bush's numbers were so low. He wasnt a conservative. CIA operative, how funny. She was married to a diplomat, went to diplomatic functions. Ya, bet she secured some real secrets, prolly the kind of misinformation they want us to believe. Just like when her husband went to Nigeria.

It isn't completely true. A lot of the people I know (not all the people in the world, but the people I really know) were mad during a lot *if not all* of these other things being posted about. They fought and were called crazy and conspiracy theorists.... Ridiculed at every turn.

I see a pattern arising.

There's a law in America that says doctors cannot turn away patients for any reason, even if they cannot pay.

Looking at it from a doctors point of view, they chose to become doctors to treat patients from whatever it was that called to them to become doctors etc etc

What a uniquely and strangely twisted view. Doctors become doctors to treat sick people, agree there. It's their calling. Under the current US system, they have to turn away sick people who can't afford it, so long, tough love. I have many Doctor friends, who would find this current US system abhorrent in the extreme, and contradictory to the Hippocratic Oath.

In my paltry experience, Doctors become Doctors because they want to help sick people, not to phone in a private (let's never forget, profit-driven) insurance company to make sure that the poor sick individual they're about to treat is covered in their policy, before actually helping the poor bastard.

I wonder at America sometimes, I really do.

Looking at it from a doctors point of view, they chose to become doctors to treat patients from whatever it was that called to them to become doctors. Knowing this, should they be DICTATED to whom they can treat and how they should be treated. The freaking IRS is going to be in charge of this, telling who can get what and when. Where do the the doctors get a say in that. These doctors who were graced with the skill to become doctors put forward more times than not their own money to receive the knowledge to treat patients. They could just as easily quit due to the demands that this bill is going to put on them. Then I ask you, where will this country be in terms of getting the RIGHT to see a doctor when there could possibly be none left? What will we do then, see the local witch doctor, shaman, etc. Maybe there will be those traveling salesmen that come to your door with the MIRACLE elixir to save your life. Doctors are a LUXURY in this day and age, they are a MIRACLE in of themselves.

Wall poster spotted in NY NY, by IABer MrHyde:

You didn't get mad when the Supreme Court stopped a legal recount and appointed a President.
You didn't get mad when Cheney allowed Energy company officials to dictate energy policy.
You didn't get mad when a covert CIA operative got outed.
You didn't get mad when the Patriot Act got passed.
You didn't get mad when we illegally invaded a country that posed no threat to us.
You didn't get mad when we spent over 600 billion on said illegal war.
You didn't get mad when over 10 billion dollars just disappeared in Iraq.
You didn't get mad when you saw the Abu Grahib photos.
You didn't get mad when the government was illegally wiretapping Americans.
You didn't get mad when we let a major US city drown.
You didn't get mad when the deficit hit the trillion dollar mark.
You finally got mad when the government decided that people in America deserved the right to see a doctor if they are sick.

At least Obama is doing something about healthcare. Many presidents have talked about it, but tell me one who got something like this passed.

One thing I have to say on this topic of Obama Care is that the Democrats passed a bill that they themselves didn't read. Nancy (I'm in the popular crowd now) Pelosi said,"Pass the bill to find out whats in the bill." Nobody could read that bill in so few short of days to actually understand whats in the thing. I couldn't and wouldn't put my trust in something that hasn't even been read by the people who presented it as a new LAW in the country. It's almost like a pilot skimming over a manual at flight school and then proclaiming that she/he is ready to fly a Boeing 747. If you knew that would you want to be a passenger on that flight? Why should I as an American citizen have a bill forced on me that has been barely glanced at by the people who passed it.

Heh. I'm really loving that so many Americans don't understand socialised medicine. Watching them burst a gut is really funny.

Don't ever ask them why the people in nations who provide such care are so eager to keep it. If they think about it too hard the'll probably explode.

I love that Obama gets rid of the god damn public option to appease all these crazy republicans who've got no idea what the drat is going on in the first place -- then we pass health care reform WITHOUT the public option -- and they're still screaming about socialism. We may as well have just included it, because it obviously makes no difference to those assclowns what's actually happening in this country. They just need a reason to be angry at the black guy.

"Many americans "like" the their low taxes and are not ready to pay 40-60% taxes of their income in order to ensure a clean health."

But they're already paying it; just in health insurance rather than tax.

Do they seriously not understand that the taxes will go up, but their health insurance payments will disappear. And on balance, they might even end up paying less (no profit margain at the insurance company level).

Well, with a government-provided insurance system, like the British National Insurance, anyway.

And that's not even on the table at the moment.
