Monday, April 05, 2010 8:58:27 AM I love the way that these mongooses aren't looking at the snake in fear, but with an expression of "MMMmmmm... foooood." |

Sunday, April 04, 2010 9:29:16 PM Lionhart: "Not a pointless point to ponder at all, actually, and the simple answer is to look at the root of the word. Words that came from Greek, for example, such as hippopotamus, become hippopotamuses, whereas Latin-derived words such as octopus, become octopi." Mongoose is an English-ized version of the Indian word "mangus." So it doesn't really follow any traditional rules. I looked it up. |

Saturday, April 03, 2010 8:25:38 PM Of course d3, but not much stranger than mooses or plural goose. It sounds weird only because we are accustomed to hearing the words as they are acceptably pronounced. That in and of itself does not explain the absence of a singular rule to bind the plural format of an 'oose' suffix. (Though surely there are some etymological explanations for the disparities, I'm just too lazy to find them.) Besides, the question WAS pretty pointless. |
