Dear people going "LAWL AMERUCA WEREN'T NO COUNTRY IN 1769 SO SAN DIEGO COULDN'T NOT HAVE EXISTENATED"
Notice how San Diego is a Spanish name? This is because the land was claimed by Spain in 1542 and there was a functioning town there by the 1600s.
A better question might be why a British subject in the Rhode Island area would travel to Spanish owned California across a largely uncharted continent. |

There was no San Diego in 1769. People didn't head west until the 1849 Gold Rush. President Jefferson didn't even buy the middle western part of the United States from France until 1803.(Louisiana Purchase) The auction was a con. |

What is known as the United States was founded in 1776. It's settlement was even before then, starting with Jamestown, VA in 1607. |
