Thursday, April 01, 2010 1:02:34 PM Is this kind of stress likely to happen to a plane, in *any* situation? It seems those wings are heavily over designed, but then, many people's lives depend on it, so its justified. |

Thursday, April 01, 2010 9:40:18 AM That's not even as far as they go. I've heard they'll go completely vertical before failure. |

Turbulence doesn't bend wings that far, so it's great they can handle strain of that extent. |

Thursday, April 01, 2010 5:30:06 AM I'm going to memorise this picture in my head, so that next time I'm in bad turbulence, watching a wing acting like Rolf Harris's favourite instrument.. I'll feel a bit safer. Except... it still doesn't model turbulence very well does it.. |

Thursday, April 01, 2010 4:43:01 AM I actually thought it was more commonly known, but yeah all airplane wings HAVE to be flexible, some more than others ... that's why they look so flimsy when you're actually flying, because if you were in an emergency situation, those wings aren't going to break off unless you hit something, and you can glide to safety if all else fails |

Thursday, April 01, 2010 3:25:00 AM It's meant to be possible for them to bend so much the tips touch each other and they shouldn't break... |

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 8:36:06 PM Of course the wings bend, they have to be able to flap for the plane to fly. Duh. |

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 7:01:17 PM This was a stress test to see how far they would bend without breaking. Every commercial jet has to undergo these sort of tests so that they can determine the maximum stresses the plane can take. That data is then fed into computers that, In the future, Will help the plane fly and stay safe. |
