Saturday, March 06, 2010 7:34:20 PM I haven't heard about how they are for jumping, but apparently those things are better for running than real legs because they can absorb more shock and they have more spring. |

Saturday, March 06, 2010 7:31:43 PM inspirational sure, against the odds no. Those are basically large springs on the bottom of her stubs that give her more of an advantage over other contenders, hence why they're not allowed to compete in the same Olympics. It's be like giving a handicapped man a turbo charged wheelchair and having him race against non-handicapped people. |

Saturday, March 06, 2010 3:01:11 AM @DieDSPolice"Just not fair" That's pretty much the reason why people with handicaps and/or prosthetic limbs are competing in their own category. I doubt we'll see this girl racing against Michael Johnson. |

Saturday, March 06, 2010 2:07:00 AM This picture was really encouraging... until I realized she'd probably end up losing her arms, too, when she botches the landing. Cruel fate. =( |

Friday, March 05, 2010 9:11:33 PM @simim23: "to add onto that, it's like saying there was a way to put wheels on a person's body to enable them to speed up to 90mph, faster than a cheetah."Give me a bicycle and I can certainly ride faster than any olympic sprinter can run. Nobody is saying she isn't an athlete, that she hasn't trained her butt off, or that she isn't capable of amazing physical feats. But she has mechanical aid that is superior to the human body. "What you have to take in account for is that the human body can still only take a certain amount of recoil." That doesn't even mean anything - a human body can take multiple G's of force, far more than your calves can generate. Your foot is a ~10 inch lever arm with a muscle levered for <1 mechanical advantage. Her prosthetic looks like ~20 inches with a spring with significantly better energy return than your calf. She is certainly operating at an advantage. Not saying she isn't amazing, though. It's badass. Just not fair |
