I personally think it's cruel, but I also think having a dogs ears or tail docked for anything other than medical reasons is also cruel. I like my animals not mutilated thanks. The difference between us and them is that they don't make the choice.

I think I found my new career. Not sure how many of those goddam cats would survive the Pmarren Kitteh Piercing Clinic, but I'm sure I'd look forward to going to work everyday.

Cats = Suck

"That's unethical, inhumane, cruel, emotionally and physically scarring, and I'm pretty sure it's illegal in some areas. There is NO good reason for someone to rip out a cats nails. Lets hack off your fingers at the joints and see how great you're going to be?"

Dude, I had a cat that used to hang out around my house all the time that had no front claws and one of his front paws was completely useless (he had gotten hit by a car, poor guy.) and he could still hunt like a regular cat. I can't tell you the number of times I saw him proudly trotting across the yard with a dead chipmunk or playing with an almost dead mouse. This was an outdoor cat.

If I ever have my own cat, no I will not declaw it, but I can certainly see the reasoning behind some peoples' decision to do so.

I'm sure it's been said, but I'm lazy... But what about docking dog's tails and clipping their ears? I don't like any of that, but they get over it. The whole off balance and hard of hearing thing seems like bs. She definitely shouldn't be doing that to kittens, but it's not THAT big a deal to throw the book at her.

I'll give Holly the benefit of the doubt since the media is about as accurate as a politician.
But, mutilation is never a good thing, be it human or animal. I'm also quite sure you can't get a consent from an animal to provide bodily harm.

omg dainty give it a rest. just post us a link to your blogspot or something

She has been an IAB regular for a while now and I've seen you on this site...once. Today.
You hold no grounds for insulting anybody here.

Okay, so let me see if I'm crystal clear on this issue. Piercing animals is wrong but microchipping them is not?

I mean if we're going on the consent aspect, then animals can't give consent to what we might think is a "good" idea. If we go on the pain aspect, then maybe we should remember that that hypo that vets use is only "temporary" pain.

I wouldn't want to pierce my cats but hey, if we allow the chipping, then let's ease up on the piercing. If not, then let's get rid of the chipping too. We don't need the double standard, one's enough, thanks.

at 20 years old was adopted from an animal shelter. He was extremely sick when he was there, and my mom and dad saved him from being killed. We had him since 1994.
My other cat was the kitten of a stray cat in Chicago that my uncle rescued. We didn't know she was pregnant until she started getting extremely fat, extremely fast. He'll be turning 11 in July.
And just for the heck of it, my dog was also adopted in 2004 from the same animal shelter my original cat was adopted from. My rabbits were also adopted from a shelter in 2008 as bunnies. My original degu was adopted from a lady who was not capable of taking care of him anymore. Unfortunately, we got him a friend who was supposed to be male. She was not male, she was a girl, and there were many baby degus. They're freaking adorable, and I love them to death, but if they never came into this world, I would be perfectly ok with that. At least I know I have a good 8-15 years of having a companion animal. (Bunnies and degus)

"How many homeless, abused, feral, etc. cats have you adopted? How much have you donated to humane societies? Do tell..."

I donate to places that do TNR, I used to volunteer at the local animal shelter (not recently, though, since I'm finishing school next month. Have to get all my stuff in order because I can do that again) And I've also donated to other organizations that support various animal welfare/rights. (And most DEFINITELY not WWF. If the animal isn't a tiger, wolf, or panda, they don't give a flying lemur about them. My money will go to places that actually use it in the way they portray) (Also, just because I'm sure this will come up, I've never donated to PETA. Just because I'm vegan, doesn't mean you can link me to them. They are an animal welfare group who do things for attention [which everyone gives them], and very little of what they are involved in I support. There ARE tons and tons of other AR organizations out there.) And my cat who passed away in 2008

pierced kitten when there are STARVING CHILDREN in Africa! (Which I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of the people who complain about that have never donated a cent to the starving children of Africa, much less the starving children elsewhere in the world. )

Double standards, hypocrisy, yadda yadda yadda.

"i agree with everyone saying people are uptight because it's a cat. also, i bet these SAME people eat meat, wear leather, live in houses insulated by products tested on animals, take medication tested on animals, and to top it off, wear shoes or other forms of clothing made by a parentless asian child."

Hear, hear! It makes me laugh when I see people crying over a dog who was 'kidnapped' and had his ears cut off with hedge shearers, or in this 'gothic kitten' case. It's hypocritical, and not even remotely as horrible as what happens to millions of animals on a daily basis so you can buy a hamburger for $1 at McDonalds.

Also, in ALLLLLL the posts about humans being abused/harmed/killed, you never see anyone referring to what horrible things non-human animals go through each day. But when IAB gets a post about the harm done to cats/dogs/dolphins/horses/etc, you see a bunch of people complaining on how HUMANS have it just oh-so bad, and that how DARE you be upset about a pi

"Oh, so it's completely okay to take your baby in and get their ears pierced against their will(because babies, like kittens, cannot vocalize their consent/lack thereof)?

But do it to kittens, and you're like OH NOEZ!!"

I never said it was OK to pierce human babies ears. I personally think it's weird. There comes in the whole consent issue again.

"Also, if there should be less babies, there should be less kittens. For every person I see, I've seen 3 stray cats running loose."

Yeah, I agree. People need to stop breeding, since there is millions of homeless animals killed every year. And those who breed are just adding to the problem.

""Does the law really protect animals more than BABIES?"

No, it doesn't, and you're a drating idiot if you think so. And I see nothing special about human babies. The less of them the better. "

"So, what should the punishment be for piercing several cats without the intention to cause harm, but causing harm inadvertently, as was said by the vet?"

Punishment? The vet should lose his license for being a greedy bastard thinking he or one of his buds could charge $1000 to 'rehabilitate' a kitten.

I'll take the rings out for free. I won't charge a thing to feed fluffy while nature heals the holes.

"Docking a doberman is cosmetic surgery done professionally "

Plenty of people can't afford a vet and do it themselves. Docking, cropping, dobies, pit bulls.... Look it up. Just like plenty of people do their own piercing and body mods.

If I take fluffy to the vet and insist that it be pierced, is that still cruel?

How come I can do that with a child and nobody cares?

How is this any worse than tail docking, ear clipping, neutering, or any other body modifications unwillingly imposed upon animals?
