Tuesday, February 23, 2010 8:22:47 PM I remember another news report, where they said they only did it to some laptops that had been stolen. Then all this started. But is it really that big of a surprise? Cell phones have features for parents and others to log onto a site and see where their kids are, I can do that with my laptop and desktop too. There are hundreds of sites offering software to remotely use other computers. Sure it's wrong since they were watching kids, but sometimes, the things the kids do themselves, is worse. Just watch youtube... |

Monday, February 22, 2010 5:25:18 AM if my kids ever come home with a school issued laptop, first thing that happens is a HDD format... Even before i read this article i knew it was only a matter of time before government issued laptops became a vessel for someone to stick their nose into your personal life. There's so many things wrong with this story i don't know where to start. A child gets disciplined at school for 'bad' behavior at HOME? Try going to the school and telling them you're installing a remotely accessible camera in your kids classroom and see how it goes over. If you're not outraged about this you should be |

Saturday, February 20, 2010 6:16:28 PM BigWaFuu.They'll probably get smarter. No standardized bullpoo you see in public schooling. Why, back in the day, we used to be culturally diverse, with an amazing literacy level. I learned throughout 10 years of school how to copy/paste using a pencil -.- |

Saturday, February 20, 2010 3:01:50 PM "AAAANNNDDDD....One more reason my kids will be home schooled. I also just covered up my webcam."One more reason to turn your children stupid? Yeah home school will really help their social behavior when they try to get a date. This is no big deal, just tape the lens or dont use the laptop. Also, I heard there was a bear who could help sort this underage business out. |

Saturday, February 20, 2010 1:55:36 PM This is my school district (though I went to Lower Merion, not Harriton.) I've been thinking a lot about this story, and I keep coming back to one central thought -What the hell? I didn't get a laptop when I was there! I know it was in 1993, but they didn't even give me a calculator. |

Saturday, February 20, 2010 10:20:07 AM To be honest, I'm amazed this surprises anyone. When I was still in high school MANY MANY years ago, they installed hidden cameras in all of the classrooms. The only reason we found out is because a careless teacher left the memo out on his desk about how to access the camera in the main office and that the students aren't to be told they are being watched. And because I'm nosy and read it.

Saturday, February 20, 2010 6:46:06 AM It would only be legal if they had parental consent. It is considered invasion of privacy no matter who was the try owner of the laptop is. No prior notification to the parents was given, being a parent myself I would be really pissed and pull my kid from that school. With the school claiming no wrong-doing it would be comparable if I stuck a webcam in my really hot downstairs neighbors bedroom, claiming that it's okay to do this because I'm the manager of the complex with the responsibility to keep up security of the building. |

Friday, February 19, 2010 10:38:15 PM Actually, my old high school did something similar. You could enter a password to take down the security blocks so you could access sites like Hotmail that are usually blocked, but the computer took pictures of what was on the monitor every second and sent them back to a main file somewhere, so they could see what we were looking at/doing, even our personal e-mail. |

Friday, February 19, 2010 7:47:01 PM simple way to avoid being spied upon: 1) Get some duct tape and paper. 2) Place a piece of paper the size of the web cam camera on the sticky side of the duct tape. 3) Place duct tape with paper over the webcam. 4) Stick headphones into the microphone port. 5) Cover any built in microphones with duct tape. Now, they cant record you without your knowledge. to use the webcam and mic, remove duct tape, and take the headphones out of the microphone port. They cant see or hear you if you cover their eyes and ears. |
