Thursday, February 04, 2010 10:07:39 PM Lowe22, it's not a waterfall. First, there's no river leading to it, and second, it's coming from the top of the rock. This site has original scans of the tourist brochures showing exactly what they did and how they did it. http://www.firefall.com/journal.asp
They stopped doing the Yosemite Firefall more than 40 years ago. Jeff Sullivan, the guy who posted that picture on Flicker claiming it as his own, is a lying sack of $h!+. |

Thursday, February 04, 2010 5:13:04 AM It's not a 'shop' and it's got nothing to do with embers/fire.It's a waterfall lit by the sunset. Source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffreysull... |

Wednesday, February 03, 2010 11:20:48 AM "And Davy, you're right: Hollywood screenplays don't count as literature.""um, old ollie? Lord of the Rings is not a Hollywood film. it was made in New Zealand. " It was filmed in New Zealand, but a LOT of scenes were filmed in front of a blue screen, in a studio. Very likely, in Hollywood.
And Lord of the Rings is literature first, movie second. |

Wednesday, February 03, 2010 3:06:25 AM Sounds like you got a good one Davy! (possibly jolokia chillies from the sound of it)There is no standard faal, so sometimes (for a mid-life-crisis-chilli-head) its a disappointment. Sometimes a 'lesser' heat dish is packing some serious chile and it blows your socks off. Last nights was good. "hurt me plenty" without actually killing me. I wish capsaiwhatsit dissolved before exiting though... Totally Kamchatked today!

Tuesday, February 02, 2010 11:44:49 PM vv A Phaal, Matt? And a hot one at that? Are you fecking serious?I tried a phaal once on Brick Lane in London. After my sixth glass of milk, I had to call the waiter over to ask if it was supposed to hurt this much while I was eating it... Little did I know that the intense pain of ingestion was only to be surpassed the next day by the excruciating agony of the subsequent excretion. Never again. |

Tuesday, February 02, 2010 10:29:06 PM I must say, that was one of my better trolls. Hey, at least I started something interesting. And Davy, you're right: Hollywood screenplays don't count as literature. And finally, I suppose by now you have all Googled "Yosemite Firefall" to see what's really going on in the picture. |

Tuesday, February 02, 2010 6:54:09 PM "At 9:00 each evening in Camp Curry, the crowd which had gathered for the nightly campfire program, would fall silent. A man would call out to the top of Glacier Point "Let the Fire Fall!", and a faint reply could be heard from the top of the mountain. Then a great bonfire of red fir bark would be pushed evenly over the edge of the cliff, appearing to the onlookers below as a glowing waterfall of sparks and fire." |

Tuesday, February 02, 2010 6:33:03 PM Actually Davymid there is a LOT of lava (or magma, if you want to be technical) in Yosemite. Just not at the surface.
Ohhh, be careful about being getting technical around a geologist. Lava, by the very definition of the term, is magma at the surface. Hence no lava at Yosemite. I rest my case, Your Honour. |

Tuesday, February 02, 2010 5:10:25 PM it's not Photoshop. It's a long-term exposure accomplished by holding the camera's shutter open to achieve the softened effect of the lava in this picture
There ain't no lava in Yosemite, buddy. And for what it's worth, that quote is from the movie only. Doesn't appear in Tolkien's original text. |
