"Am I the only one bugged by newspapers always substituting "and" with commas?"This comes from the bygone days of dead-tree-based newspapers. If you only have a limited amount of space for a headline, you can use bigger type if you use fewer words. Of course, this practice makes no sense at all in the age of the Interwebs, since "and" only takes 2 bytes more than a comma. Trying to write headlines using fewer words than necessary can result in some rather humorous WTF moments. James Tatanto, editor of OpinionJournal.com had a daily recount of the worst of these in his "Best of the Web" blog under the category heading, "Someone set up us the bomb." |

Especially since you generally need a degree to get a real job in journalism- not a good look for the schools. And people wonder why they call us "STUPID Americans..." |
