There's two reasons someone would cut themselves in my mind; because it feels good to them for some psychological or physical reason (cutting does release endogenous opioids/endorphins)and/or for the reaction it elicits in others...and the fact that she's taking a photo of her cutting herself when cutters tend to do so alone and in a ritualistic fashion (much like habitual drug use) points to the latter. Also, why would she feel the need to cut words she already knows unless they were meant for others to read?
Now don't get me wrong, it doesn't matter the reason, anyone who gets to that point needs help regardless. I'm just saying that I think it's less that she actually likes cutting and more that she wants to elicit the exact reactions the picture is getting here. Chances are that, just like often with drug use, or acting out, or anything behavior like that, she wants people do know she does it almost as much as she actually wants to do it, so really we're only fueling the f |

alexus2394-thank you for voicing your opinion. You really stood up for people everywhere who suffer from mental illness. This is a sad, sad photo. But, it is even more sad that people who have serious issues can't get the help they need because of people who degrade them and laugh at them and diminish the problem. No one has the authority to guess what her motives are for posting this. For some people who cut, they do so for attention because no one is giving them any. This is also much more serious that the "emo" kid who scratches their wrist with a safety pin and then cries about how much their loving parents suck. Look at her photos. She is killing herself! For those of you who laugh,you are only contributing to the problem. |

Myths:
*Self Injury affects only women* (some psychologists suspect that the number of male self injurures is proportional to female)
*S.I. is for attention* (this is true sometimes, but in most cases, the person will go to great lengths to hide what they have done)
*taking pictures means you want to be caught* people who cut are sometimes proud of the scars. They like them and they want to remember them.
*The disorder only affects thirteen year olds* (the average cutter is estimated to be in their late twenties. this disorder has been known to affect the young, but also the elderly)stop being ignorant. I dont find this funny, I find it sad. |

It's possible that they are fake but not shopped. I can see an "artist" doing this either for publicity or for feminist reasons. A decent body artist could easily fake shallow cuts very well. |
