So where is the unfair depiction here? Statistically, it's not; just because one Asian person is depicted using a utensil indigenous to their culture (as if that does something to typecast them in itself) doesn't mean all such people [though race doesn't exist] are represented that way by it (since it's impossible to represent everybody i.e. the failure of Democracy at higher and more inclusive levels). |

And for all you with a 'stick up' your ass: everybody seems to feel that portraying someone with any accoutrement (chopsticks, corn-rows, CONFEDERATE FLAGS, etc.) which happens to be associated with what might be discerned as their culture constitutes an unacceptable form of stereotyping.Perhaps this is because these associations with culture are necessarily being made on a racial basis, since that is the only relevant way to distinguish the subject in this context. However, that does not make it RACIST (look it up in the dictionary if you don't believe me). Neither does it make it unfairly stereotypical. Why? Because Asians, for example, invented chopsticks. Nobody would complain if a white person was depicted using them for utensils on these same grounds, right?
Well, in reality it's even more common for an Asian person to be using them than a white person; and equally likely, on a case-by-case basis, that the Asian person would be using them as not. |

The chopsticks are the thing that's really confusing me here. Does the designer of the poster think that asians always eat food with chopsticks? Did he put chopsticks in her hands to make it clear that she's asian? Or is it meant to suggest that the reason her coworkers are making fun of her is that she's asian and using chopsticks? Somehow, each option is just as bad. |

Racism... it's always unacceptable. Harassment... there's no excuse. Hot chicks... use chop sticks.
And I always use chop sticks when I eat Asian food. feels more authentic. Also, I went to a chanese restaurant and asked for chop sticks. they asked Chinese or American. I said Chinese. they handed me a couple toothpicks. Just a side note. |
