Monday, November 30, 2009 9:56:22 AM Cool concept. I wish we had rings. But weird music choice. There are so many inspiring works of music that wouldn't limit the experience to something religious. |

Monday, November 30, 2009 9:34:15 AM It would also mean: >We could not have satellites in Geosynchronous or Geostattionary orbit, which is vital for GPS and certain communications to work. >Most of our vehicles would have to be launched far away from the equator. >A space elevator would be EXTREMELY impractical. >Mankind would have to be more careful about the junk it puts in space |

Monday, November 30, 2009 9:16:24 AM that settles it... lets blow up the moon and make this happen
lets trash the moon, and get us some rings! but make them like a crystal that would break up the light and make it look like a trippy rainbow.
That would be a very bad idea. Having the moon in one piece plays an important role in life on Earth. Breaking it up would have some bad effects. It would be easier to grab some asteroids and tow them in, anyway. |

Monday, November 30, 2009 8:49:42 AM "'I think the moon's gravity would make a complete mess of them though.' Not necessarily. Saturn has dozens of moons and the rings look just fine."Our moon is exceptionally big in terms of moon size compared to planet size. Given the amount of gravity our planet "makes" compared to the amount of gravity our moon "makes", it might not be possible for us to have rings. Then again, it might. |

Monday, November 30, 2009 8:44:13 AM Wouldn't the rings eventually fall towards Earth and cause havoc? I seem to remember reading that Saturn's rings do that and that they'll eventually disappear |

Monday, November 30, 2009 8:42:54 AM how about we only live on nuclear power and make a ring out of nuclear waste? maybe it will glow in the night? |

Monday, November 30, 2009 8:39:28 AM Actually, since the position of the rings on the sky of any given position on earth is constant, this would have been so useful for navigation in the old days. |

Monday, November 30, 2009 8:30:05 AM How about , instead of blowing up the moon we make a ring out of satellites and stuff , it would be like a giant ring of information! |

Monday, November 30, 2009 7:59:58 AM Okay, that is awesome... How do we make it happen?
lol. We don't. I doubt this will ever happen, ie; the sun will engulf the earth before 'tidal effects' break up the moon. Anyway, it would make satellites of any kind impossible. |

Monday, November 30, 2009 7:34:21 AM The Earth will eventually have a ring system when the Moon is tidally disrupted. Can't remember the time frame, but the Moon will stop moving away from Earth at some point and start to slowly creep closer. Then Earth's pull will tear it apart once inside the Roche lobe and we should have a thin ring. |

Monday, November 30, 2009 7:26:18 AM There would also be a large portion on the southern hemisphere that would be in shadow the majority of the time. This in turn would affect the climate drastically. But I digress, all the cool planets have rings. We should install some. |
