emily1991, probably because the english speakers are notorious for prouncing foreign words the way they think they "should" be pronounced rather than trying to pronounce them the proper way? |

It is drived from two very very common dutch names back in the day. Jan & Kees, when the english would talk about the dutch settelement on Manna Hatta, they would say, all those Jans and Kees' up there, over time it became yankee. |

Alternatively...John Bull was a character representing England in some popular political satires. 'Janke' could have been a diminuitive Dutch form of 'John', which could have been used by Dutch settlers to insult English settlers. Somewhat like calling USA people 'Sammy' as a diminuitive form of {uncle) Sam. |
