Tuesday, October 13, 2009 1:20:26 PM Some people may refer to their child as "lil' monkey", but historically the term "monkey" has been a word used to degrade and dehumanize African Americans. Whether the maker of the doll intended to do this or not can't really be known, but what is known is that the doll is clearly offensive to a lot of people. I find it confusing that so many people would tell others to get over it and move on when something like this is yet another reminder of the many inequalities that still exist between people of color and Whites in this country. People think that because the president if African American, that racism is a thing of the past. For those of you who think racism is no longer an issue in the U.S., please educate yourselves. You can begin with the following article: http://www.redroom.com/blog/tim-wise/in-... |

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 8:30:00 AM the part that is racist is not the fact that its a baby next to the monkey. but because the baby is wearing a hat that says "lil' monkey" next to a monkey, now if it was just the baby, by herself with the hat, you would assume it to be a nickname, but because of the monkey plushy, it is assumed that they are calling the baby a monkey as well. |
