It isn't Japanese, It is Tuvan. (A tiny region between Russia and Mongolia). It is called throat singing or overtone singing. When they are singing all weird etc they are actually making two notes at time same time. The little whistley noise is them amplifying another note from the one they are singing. |

i learned about this in an international music survey course like 2 years ago... that whistling sound and the freakishly low singing are coming from the same person- singing really low and harshly like that activates our second set of vocal chords...this phenomenon can also randomly happen during seizures which has led many to believe that the afflicted people were possessed by demons...creepy but interesting.. |
