Well said Rick_S. I've often wondered why some athiests think there's no way 'God' could have created evolution. He makes the whole universe, but natural selection is 'beyond Him'? Lmao!

I view holy scriptures as possibly being from God, but filtered through im-perfect humans, thus subject to error. Also remeber the Bible and other books weren't written in English, eh? Many things can get 'lost in translation' or just plain messed up.

You know when Adam and Eve get kicked out of Eden, their sons (Cain and Able) took wives. Where did these women come from? eh? Yes the Bible, even Genesis, is a parable, not literal.

good point AntEconomist. I have always questioned the term "man made" as it stands to reason we are natural ourselves. If a colony of ants invented plastic, we'd call it a miracle of nature. But because we did it, its merely "man made".

Let me clarify my comments on Natural Selection. Natural Selection is the process by which living things change, over a great period of time, to adapt to their environment, and survive. The muscles on a Bison's back that give it the strength needed to dig through the heavy snow, and find buried food in the winter is an example of Natural Selection. The Bison with stronger muscles survived because they were better able to find food.

Artificial Selection is the process by which changes are made to an animal, by selectively breeding. Breeding of dogs has always been about selecting strengths and weeding out weaknesses to serve us. We want a dog that can go down a hole, so we select the smaller dogs to breed. We want a dog to herd our sheep, so we breed the smarter dogs. Survival of the species has nothing to do with it. Survival of the species has nothing to do with the breeding of these cattle.

1) Natural selection is something that happens in nature, with no thought process behind it. The strongest survive because the properties that they possess help them to. What is happening here is not natural selection because there is a thought process driving it. We want bigger muscles, so we get involved and force the cattle with bigger musces to breed. Our involvement for a purpose that suits us is what stops it from being natural selection. Nature didn't select the bigger muscles, we did.

2) I never said I believed in God, just asked the question. If God, as defined in the Bible (and Torah and Quran), exists, and the Bible is known to use parables, whose to say that the story of Creation isn't a parable? Isn't it possible that this God, if He exists, used evolution as a means to create life?

Nataly, why would something made by humans be artificial, but something made by other species not? There are non-human species that, for their own benefit, influence breeding. Would we call that artificial, or is it simply that we regard humans as somehow unnatural?

AntEconomist, madest, it IS artificial selection, it's a drating term and it's learnt in school! And it's pretty logical: what's made by human is artificial. 40-49, jeez.

allthough it is natural selection, im sure with this cows size comes a myriad of health issues. just because it was done using natural selection doesnt make it natural. because in reality if this cow were born. it would have human help to keep it alive. and thus it would die.

PS. would someone get rid of the spam bot Kelly1411 please

"technically its not natural selection. natural selection has to occur in nature to better the survival of the species."

If humans are natural, then this *is* natural selection. Smart humans out-survive dumb humans. Smart humans create big cows to feed more humans.

ok heres the thing. this is much healthier than eating the steroids and growth hormones. but heres the thing-they did this with chickens and now many chickens cant even stand up to support their own weight. plus they live in tiny cages all their lives to lay eggs.

If cows were meant to be that big, they would have gotten that big naturally to survive in nature. these weird cows cantr be all that healthy.

but perhaps having them this large would make it so even less cows suffered to become food each year?

i am not against eating meat. you need it not to survive, but be healthy. what i am against is the terrible way thet the livestock is treated until it BECOMES meat.

"enhanced", twilight. Look at the packaging, you'll see 'enhanced with up to 10% of a solution'

The "a solution" is what makes me wonder...

Stand in the middle of your average "small" bushfire helping fight it and then tell me how weak and victimized the planet is. Earth pwns us, it ain't no victim believe me.

However, you DO raise an interesting philosophical point mate. I believe that this religious attitude of men having "dominion over all the earth, subdue it" etc is at least in part responsible for the sad, rape-victim state of the planet today. We're constantly finding new species, and immediately placing them on the Endangered, or Near Extinct list.

My personal view is, the sooner we drop this religious dogamtic "carte blanche" attitude (which is spelt out pretty clearly in the Bible and other holy books), which gives us humans moral justification for pwning all other life on the planet, all the better.

We seriously need to move as a species towards an attitude of custodianship, where we are just another inhabitant of this planet, and we have no more right to be here than the cows. Or the wombats. Or the fungi. Or whatever.

If we get there in time, we might just save the planet. And surely there's no nobler cause than that?
