Aircraft-grade ducked ape. Four layers: 1) clear polymer UV-resistant plastic backing; 2) aircraft-grade aluminium-foil; 3) usually a high tensile form of mylar or something to bond layer 4 to layer 3; 4) can be either aerospace adhesive or aerospace adhesive impregnated fabric - often carbonfiber or fiberglass. Used for cracks and skin damage, it makes a great temporary fix. Can keep a wing - or flap in this case - from falling apart. While the fabric version falls under the definition of Duct Tape, don't call it that in front of an aircraft mechanic - unless you WANT to see where that 7" wide piston can go. . . That is actually VERY high grade specialty aircraft tape. It's very strong and completely different from duct tape. |

They've used similar tape to patch up cars for racing in NASCAR. As long as you're not breaking the sound barrier it's fine for awhile. |

My uncle used to work for DARPA as the main computer guy or something, and he learned that B2 bombers had gaps sealed with a radar absorbent black adhesive tape. He made an innocent comment that "Wow! a 2 billion dollar aircraft held together with duct tape!" The dude in charge said (in an evidently threatening way) "That's not duct tape." |

It generally called "speed tape", and yes, it looks superficially like duct tape. Sure is quite a bit more expensive, but the looks on passengers' faces when they see it is priceless. :D |
