Wednesday, July 08, 2009 1:28:23 AM Actually, my kids do, in fact, have a "right handed" fork - it curves toward the mouth when you are holding it in your right hand. If you held it in your left hand, it would curve away from the mouth. But their explanation as to why it is extremely rude to eat with the left hand in Iran is wrong. The real reason is because in ancient times they didn't have toilet paper, so the left hand was UNCLEAN (because one wiped one's ass with it) and so only the clean right hand could touch food. So, imagine if a thief has his right hand cut off...he has to eat with the same hand he wipes his ass with |

Tuesday, July 07, 2009 7:32:19 PM The first question is wrong!!! I would know, I'm Chinese.Yes, Chinese mothers make their kids clear everything on the plate. It is considered wasteful to throw away food. There are only 2 exceptions: 1. Chinese New Year, where excess food on the table is a sign of having excess food throughout the year 2. A large social gathering where finishing all the food will make it seem like you are still hungry. However, you are still expected to finish the food on your plate, but not on the table. |

Tuesday, July 07, 2009 7:06:32 PM Solid_CatBecause in Islamic society it is a very strong cultural thing to only eat with your right hand, regardless of your dominant hand. |

Tuesday, July 07, 2009 6:52:55 PM in the "you are left-handed and they give you a "right-handed" fork" question why the answer is "just eat with your right hand" arent you supposed to be left handed??? |

Tuesday, July 07, 2009 6:40:19 PM Japan-wise also never pass food from hashi to hashi (from person to person via chopsticks) as this is a custom reserved for sorting bones after cremation into the pot used to store them. The large fragments are passed from family member to family member before being deposited. |

Tuesday, July 07, 2009 6:37:41 PM 9/11 but some huge generalisations. I can categorically say in Japan slurping noodles has nothing to do with food appreciation. It is basically just wolfing your food down as fast as possible and it is very hot. This cools it and brings noodles into the mouth. It also only applies to ramen, although many people also apply it to soba, spaghetti and any similar dishes.Finishing your food, as with China, is also a no-no regarding amounts. A more appropriate food tradition in Japan would be to never stand your hashi (chopsticks) up in food, as this is how it is presented to dead ancestors at memorial shrines. |

Tuesday, July 07, 2009 5:53:18 PM after reading the comments, it seems the quiz maker took generalizations of what they heard and made this quiz. what really bugged me was the "right-handed fork" question...they didn't offer the "there is no right-handed fork" which was my immediate thought.

Tuesday, July 07, 2009 5:48:47 PM my only argument is the Japan one. yes, slurping means you like it, but it doesn't imply you are trying to shove as much as possible into your mouth (or are impatient). slurping the noodles is the only way to really get the thin/'watery' sauce into your mouth the same time as the noodles, its not like they are using spoons over there. |

Tuesday, July 07, 2009 5:09:43 PM Since when is it polite to burp after a meal? I guess I'm not very Canadian, since the all-knowing quiz said it is polite. Pshh. |

Tuesday, July 07, 2009 4:25:33 PM I think the Spanish one is BS. I've been to Spanish snack bars many times and I haven't seen a single person just throw everything to the floor like that. Maybe just a specific region of Spain does that, who knows. |
