Not a 'waste of taxpayer dollars' as a possible, and probably likely punishment is a fee, so it pays for itself.
Just to correct illogic.
As for the actual issue, its a horrible law. I hate the look, but the law against it violates the first amendment. I'm not too worried about the issue however, as I'm sure sooner or later it will make it to the supreme court and be shot down.

It's about time someone ended this hip hop/rap fashion trend.

I do agree this should be punished, but not as harshly as this.

Ahh another waste of taxpayer's dollars-
they waste there time busting "criminals" for having their underwear showing, but how many pedophiles and tweakers walk the streets unchecked?
Disgusting.

Sigh... I guess so. I appreciate both your politeness. Nothing I say will change the law. It just irks me that officers can now go around like private school principles correcting everyone's improper dress. But irrespective of the legality of seeing someone's underwear, can we all agree that one should not be punished as harshly for visible underwear as one should be for a DUI?

I personally don't like the trend at all, but I don't think it's fair to make it such a harsh penalty. Maybe people should wear other boxers underneath the ones that show, that way you can say it wasn't showing your underwear... But, honestly, it's a trend and it will go away soon. Why bother?

@boredfjord

A coherent and well presented argument. However, the good people of Flint, MI have chosen not to be required to look at others' underwear, and a law has been created, and the local PD is required to uphold that law.

A law which requires underwear to be covered by clothing cannot be considered racist, because it requires that people of all races cover their underwear and not just people of a certain race.

If I go to a beach/a country with a relatively hot climate, I'll expect to see more skin than I would in other, cooler places. Walking down the street of my hometown (Doesn't get higher than 30C in the summer, but down to -40C in the winter) it's not reasonable to expect to see underwear hanging out everywhere.

Like I've said, its quite possible the law is motivated by the fight against illegal weaponry being carried around by every "Gangsta" and wannabe in Detroit. It's just a coincidence that those who wear their pants like this happen to be minorities.

Swimsuits are considered socially acceptable in all developed countries. A few inches of boxer, evidently, are not. This is wildly irrational.

I don't care where the trend came from; the trend in and of itself is harmless, and that's what's relevant. Underwear will not hurt you. I even will go so far as to say that this law is probably implicitly motivated by racism, because I don't see too many people saying that The Naked Cowboy should be thrown in jail. Do you all realize that these penalties are as harsh as the penalties for a first offense DUI (or OWI) in Michigan? It's drating obscene.

"It was started in prisons for men to show their availability to other inmates. You get the idea."

Maybe if we spent more time publicizing this, this trend would die a little quicker.

Actually the sagging pants thing isn't just a "fashion" statement. It was started in prisons for men to show their availability to other inmates. You get the idea.

Out on the streets, it can have gang affiliations, not always but sort of like the red and blue colors, people who are wearing them aren't always in a gang, but in certain places they are.

Boredallthet:

Saggy pants, believe it or not, (This is true) started out as being a prison trend for relaying the sexual availability of one prisoner to another. As well, some schools enforce certain dress codes to prevent weapons being carried in the waistband of student's pants.

boredfjord:

I hope such laws come into place where I live in Canada. Baring your @$$ in public is considered indecent exposure (or something along those lines)in most developed cultures. Pants are worn at the waist to prevent such occurrences.

Assuming this is real, it's appallingly totalitarian. Legislating one's own taste in fashion is absurd and unjust, especially when the punishment for deviance from the law is so alarmingly harsh. I'm quite ashamed that so many on here seemed pleased. Apparently oppression is acceptable when it suits your prudish, irrational, conservative notions of what an American citizen's dress code ought to be.

I guess I didn't realize that baggy pants made weapons easier to hide and access, although, it seems to me it'd be easier to hide a weapon in your waistband rather then in your exposed boxer shorts...I dunno, tho, cuz Im not a criminal and don't carry weapons...neither is or does my fiance whose pants pretty much live within the "warning" level...
