JimBob, how can I give you an answer that I find reasonable because my religous beliefs are what I hold to be truth, and you don't. For me it is logical that choosing the gay lifestyle is immoral. I am not saying that that makes me better than any of these people, because I believe everyone does immoral things including myself. This is based off my religious beliefs and faith, and you and I do not share either. So, for me to give you a logical argument would require it to be based off my beliefs, just as you're argument would be based off your beliefs. And as far as questioning my religous beliefs, I have in the past, but I've come to a place in my life where I know what I believe, and I know why.
And DavyMid, if you want to extend the context of the argument, then I guess you disagree with the statement, that you don't hate pedofiles, you just don't think they should have the same rights as the rest of us.

The "tradition argument" really doesn't work either. Marriage has changed in the west several times. For example:

Legalized: interracial marriage and divorce.
Eliminated: polygamy, childhood marriages (yes there were legal at one time), and dowries (where a woman gives property and money to her husband).
Other ways tradition is broken: Women not taking the last name of their husband and the women's right to own property in a marriage
Slavery: older traditional institution dating back before marriage

Banning gay marriage is illegal and unconstitutional. The 14th amendment states, "No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

Interracial couples faced the same persecution with the same arguments that gay couples face today in the fight for marriage rights. Lookup the case of Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving. After they were married, they were prosecuted and convicted of violating the law. It was the judge's opinion that "Almighty God created the races and he placed them on separate continents. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix." This almost reminds me of the whole "God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve" thing. No there have been many big battles that never originated in California that have swept across the nation. Woman's suffrage and civil rights to name two. California has gay marriage. 36K gay people are legally wed in California. California is the 5th state that has gay marriage. Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa, have it now. Vermont is soon to follow. Eventually all 50 states will allow it and the more resistance there is the faster the change will occur.

I'm sorry Sicker, but as a person who is opposed to gay marriage, how am I supposed to listen to your side, when you bash my beliefs? It seems hypocritical to me when people present an argument that is full of hate. If you want people to see your side, then you present to them an argument that doesn't build a wall between you and them. You speak of tolerance, but you have no tolerance for anyone who dares believe differently than you. So many people just automatically assume that if you're opposed to gay marriage you must hate gays. I don't hate anyone, but I have my beliefs and how can i stray from what I hold to be true. One can love people but not agree with what they believe. Many of my friends don't agree with me on gay marriage, but that doesn't cause our friendships to end. You will never change anything or anyone by sitting up on your high and mighty throne.

The only problem with that is the fact that California may be the biggest battle of the war. California is, more or less, the trend setter when it comes to laws. When they make something a law, other states follow. As soon as California passes the bill to legalize gay marriage, you can bet a bunch of other states will follow suit. I wish they would just do it already. This isn't just going to go away and never be spoken about again. It's not affecting anybody's right to marry, it's not affecting people's current marriages, it's not diluting the sanctity of marriage since 50% of people end up getting a divorce anyway. So, really, there's no reason why it shouldn't be done.

I'm not here to argue, let alone stay on this forum. But personally I think gays should be treated just as fairly. The other day one of my friends said the most retarded statement. He said "People dont choose to be gay, but its a sin" Wow.

People that are argueing that it's against the word of the lord..re-read the bible and think about the parts you love and keep near your heart. And think about the verses that aren't so close to home.
I cannot understand how anyone can decide one part is true and the rest is left for interpretation.

I don't come back to check replies to my comments so feel free to argue with me -- I won't be here.

I'm a girl and I like girls. I've been dating girls for nearly half my life and that constitutes Not a Phase, as far as I'm concerned. I like being gay. I like not having to worry about getting pregnant or being with a partner who gets me, because she's a woman, because we're the same. Mostly, I like muff-diving. All non-virginal boys here can back me up on that, I'm sure.

I live in Canada so I can get married any old time I want and guess what? World has not ended. Society did not riot. Government did not fall down (though we do wish it would, sometimes) and the sky remained in its rightful place.

Gays are human and humans have rights. In fifty years, we will look back at this time and remember it like our parents remember segregation.

What's stopping us is ignorance. Anyone with issues allowing two people to be married is ignorant. Period.

Marriage does not have to have a religious and legal component. I got married at a courthouse. No church.

So marriage is a legal bond between two people.

How the heck, in this day and age, can we still be discriminating against a group of our fellow human beings?!?

It's a sad and terrible thing that fear and brain washing have destroyed so many lives.

If a long term couple, gay or straight, doesn't have anything in Ink binding them legally, they have No rights to funeral arrangements, medical treatment, etc. So who am I to say No you can't get married because your gay. They are here, they aren't going away, it's none of our business to even vote on really. Who came down from the Heaven's and made Anyone the ruler of what is right and not right. Homophobes aren't worried about the "marriage", they picture what two same sex people are doing in the Bedroom, THAT is what they are bent out of shape over. Homosexuals are no different to straight people, apart from the single fact that they prefer men as partners to women.

They shouldn't have any less rights than anyone else. They should be allowed to marry at their own will, and not be restricted at all.

The only restriction to marriage should be underage marriage, because there is a large chance that if you are married at a very young age (anything under about 18), you will likely regret it later.
