"Why can't those against same sex marriage simply not marry someone of the same sex?"

Because it's OBVIOUSLY the Gay Agenda to force all straight people to marry others of the same sex and turn EVERYONE gay, therefore ending the human race. :o

Comparing bestiality to homosexuality is insulting. Anyone with even a little intelligence should know that they are not the same thing at all. What a silly comparison.

madest: "Pedophelia is a crime. Polygamy is a crime. Bestiality is a crime."

Sodomy was a crime, Oral sex was a crime, Homosexuals used to be locked away in mental institutions, etc... Things changed (Incrementally). How many more "crimes" are we going to legalize in the name of freedom ?

Amaq: The only problem I see with your reasoning is that you used "belief/believe" throughout. Unless you've been in a same-sex relationship, I don't think you can know for sure that this love does not exist. I've witnessed relationships that could be nothing but love.
I respect your opinion and I respect your beliefs. My only hope is that you wouldn't block someone's right to that happiness because of them.

Well, crossing that one off the list of states to raise my future family in.

Damn this is a sad list.

And a sad country.

Oh and the next idiot here stating homosexuality leads to pedophillia is just proving what an idiot they really are when you consider how many religions are all for marrying underage virginal girls!

I'm bloody sick of seeing that ignorant stupid equasion!

When marriage was made secular, Meaning it could be performed by a judge with no religious context. The intended result was to help non-religious or cross-religious people get married, But it's unintended consequence is this issue before us now.

Ask yourself this, Had those people known then what would be happening now, Would they have changed it ? I think that answer would be a resounding no.

I just dont get the mentality here! Whats the diffrence between 2 gays living together and 2 gays married to each other? Obviously the legal status.

What reason can anyone have for denying a gay couple the same rights as a hetro couple?

There simply isnt any rational reason....and some people here cant even see that.

people of the same sex can have it, but i don't see love being tied to sex in that case. people argue the natural/physical aspects of homosexuality but i feel it is more of a psychological thing, mind over matter perhaps. i believe that love and sex are only tied between the sexes and see sex between a man and woman being natural if only because of procreation. i've heard the theories of overpopulation and whatnot but i don't buy them, if you do then i respect that.

The difference that the religious right can't grasp as so aptly pointed out by crackrJak is the "consent" part of the relationship. Pedophelia is a crime. Polygamy is a crime. Bestiality is a crime. Homosexuality is as legal as heterosexuality. The harder you fight it the dumber you sound.

"Where else it can lead to (polygamy as kenny_f so adequately put it) A foot-in-the-door so to say."

Very true, Next thing will be Nambla Pedobears wanting the right to marry their victims.

Law of unintended consequences.

Funny thing though, Prime, is that people had the same Slippery Slope idea and Sanctity of Marriage thought for when interracial marriage was being introduced.
The world did not implode then and I'm sure it will not do so now.

Why have we not learnt from our past?

So the belief that same-sex relationships are "easy," invalidate any commitment, or make it impossible? Why can't two people of the same gender have it?
I'm just trying to see the reasoning here. I realize I may be acting slow, but as I mentioned before... I apologize.

I think this whole issue depends on your view of marriage. If you see marriage as a secular contract between two people to share assets, then you're probably for gay marriage. If you see it as a promise made before God to stay with one person for the rest of your life, then you are probably against it. It's a sweeping generalization, I know, so I apologize to anyone who doesn't fit my viewpoint.

Either way, with divorce rates the way they are, marriage is basically a joke. People who "promise" to stay with each other will give up as soon as the marriage becomes inconvienent.

In this case its not so much political.
I'd say the main reasons are
1) defending the institution of marriage
1a) Where else it can lead to (polygamy as kenny_f so adequately put it) A foot-in-the-door so to say.

commitment is not wanting to put your partner before yourself. if two people could perfectly want to do as the other wished they would be one and at peace and truly in love.

".. we live in a society that has a history of abusing minorities."

True as that may be, That is still past tense.

Now, We do give minorities special privileges in all manner of things. The civil rights amendment was passed and signed in 1964, 4 years before I was born.

It hasn't leveled the "playing field", It's tipped the scales in favor of minorities for over 40 years now.

Still, That's fine with me. It lessens the validity of excuses like "The man is holding me back" and bolsters personal responsibility for ones position in life. Obama is a prime example that affirmative action and civil rights has worked in this country.

I understand that.
I'm just wondering what could be harmed by this particular subject. What political downfall will same-sex marriage cause? I'll admit, maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how this could harm society.

I'm not following your definition of commitment.

And I'll apologize to everyone in advance for any brain slowness on my part; I've only had an hour of sleep, so bear with me...

My point was that the intention of abolitionist wasn't to remove harm, it was to cause. Yet even though they caused harm, in the long run we view it as good.

Now the defense of marriage as it is now is an attack on the institution of how it originally was (and I did a really long debate with ticomeister on this so take my word that both of us are going to present point of views that are going to defend our position adequately).

Now we could do what Europe did like Angilion pointed out a few pages ago...that I forgot what it was but it made sense.
