i have worked in a call center since the age of 16...i am 24 going on 25 right now. Even in the call centers I have worked in (nothing as serious as 911) we are trained to NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES hang up on the person calling because we have no idea what thier problem may be. Hanging up on a caller is grounds for termination. There is no write up, there is no warning, no suspension, no re-training. You get fired. It is our job to answer the phone and help the person on the other end. We're trained to handle prank calls, perverts, foreign languages, beligerence...you name it. What this SHERRIF did is UNACCEPTABLE. It doesnt matter if the girl souned like she "wanted to scrap" - it was his job to take that call, he failed to do his job

"the police are required by law to help or they get sued"
Actually they do not have to help us, there have been a number of supreme court cases on it, and the individual lost every time. It's not right, but it's true.

trying to act like you're teaching me something.I've been stuck in it for 5 months, now my mother's dead most likely because she didn't get the immediate care she needed but you know what, that's life. It's not always all about you and the fact that you guys don't understand basic respect to authority in this situation is crazy. Like, look at how the girl's speaking, I listened to it again and if I were the cop I would have no idea her father's got anything to do with the call cause she sounds like she just wants to scrap.

Ok, first off don't tell me to shut up. If you want to have an intelligent conversation on our differing views that's only thing but now you're getting rude. None of you guys (from one I'm getting) can relate to being in a situation like that. For the 10th time, I have been in a constant situationg where one of my parents has needed help and I haven't gotten it from the people's whose job is to provide it. I KNOW FIRST HAND that, people care more about ego and respect than their jobs. If you come at anyone the the wrong way with an attitude weather you're right or wrong, point is you're the one who's asking THEM for help so it is your moral duty to show them respect firt and then worry about weather they did you wrong later. If this girl truly gave a crap about her father she would've calmed the hell down, calmly state her problem have an ambulence brought and then later report the cop now she's looking like the idiot along with him. Like I've said, I've been in this situation so STOP

A few years ago I called 911 to report a woman being robbed at gunpoint, I was put on hold for five minutes, I finally hung up as I watched them drive away. All I got out before they said "hold please", was "a woman is being...".

je scream

I probably speak for everyone else reading this when i say... Shut the .... up!
Your dad, who has just left hospital, is found on the kitchen floor unconcious and having a fit, do you expect his terrified 17 year old daughter to be calm and polite on the phone? No.
911 is an EMERGENCY line, in an EMERGENCY people will be stressed and the way the cop reacted can't be excused in any way.. I'll emphasise it again for you.. EMERGENCY??
Nobody has to do a god damn thing for you??
What the f*ck do they get paid for then, to send out help IF/WHEN THEY WANT TO?
She didn't even get a chance to say what went on because he hung up, without asking what the trouble is, which is his JOB
With all due respect i haven't been through such a thing, as have most people commenting on this.. But how you can support the cop is just ridiculous.. Simple

je scream - "he didn't have to do anything for her."

i don't know where you made this assumption...but in the REAL WORLD...911 is supposed to help in every situation...let it be a cat stuck in a tree...to a multiple murder...if the girl has attitude...the cop only had to say "okay calm down...what's the problem?" not "okay 1st uf awl! u dnt neid 2 b swerin ovr 9-1-1!!"...he should have just moved on...it's not like she was personally attacking him....all she said was "what the f*ck".....it would have been appropriate of him of she said "okay listen here F*CK-O! get a F*ckin ambulance down here now you stupid F*cktard!"...but no....i therefore claim your comment to be null and void thank you...don't comment again...

You guys amaze me. In this world no one has to do a God damn thing for you, point blink, end of story. It don't matter if you're a cop or not. Now, I'm looking at the cop's POV, a teenager calls, curses and has an attitude right off the bat, the girl didn't even sound like she was danger she sounded like she just wanted to get into it with the cop for saying she had a foul mouth. She didn't even mention what was going on with her dad, she was so blinded by her own personal beef with the cop that that's what outweighed the situation and she learned her lesson (unfortunately) the hard way. I am not taking anyone's side, the cop overracted by arresting her. But the girl has to know, you don't curse people out and expect them to give two poos about you, even though it's his job to overlook stuff like that, he didn't have to do anything for her. And Akijade, I've been through that situation NON STOP for months now so I know FIRST HAND how to deal with a situation like that.

So after reading the comments, I have to say that anyone who is blaming the GIRL in this situation is retarded. She was panicking. She wanted help now. 911, which we are told from little up is there to help if there is an emergency, wasn't helping. The cop flat out told her he wasn't going to send help. She had to actually leave her father and go to the station to get help.

Those of you blaming the girl have obviously never had an emergency like this. You don't know what it feels like to have someone you love in a potentially fatal situation. She could have handled it better, sure, but it was the cops job to handle it better. He's the one who's supposed to stay calm. I used to work in customer service, and if I called a customer a stupid ass, I would have been fired on the spot, and that was just cell phone insurance, not life and death.

Nice. I'm glad they're suing. That officer should have been fired. I loved how he was all "I don't know what the problem is. I couldn't get her to tell me."

Maybe it's because you KEPT HANGING UP ON HER.

My jaw dropped at the response of this 911 operator. When you are working that kind of job, you KNOW people aren't always going to be calm, cool and collected. Some people can't handle the pressure of a situation. Some freak out, some cry so much you can't understand them, and some swear.
The 17 y/o girl didn't have to swear, but HE was the adult in the situation and should have handled it accordingly.

Ok, everyone who wants to call me out for not taking the girl's side just listen. I spent the last 5 months in the hospital assiting my dying mother so there were times when she'd go up in down sometimes she'd crash unexpectedly and I'd have to go run for a nurse and there were times when the nurses wanted to take their time and try to essentially tell me to 'stfu' when I was on the verge of dropping to my knees to beg them to hurry and or scream my head off at them for not doing their job. But no, I was always calm and regained my composure in order to get what I wanted done done. This girl sounds like she's PICKING an argument, she doesn't even sound panicked she sounds like 'Who are you talking to' like some snot nose teen. She needs to swallow her pride and come at people the right way. End of story.

This happens more than you think. My friend got a 911 dispatcher fired because they didn't believe she needed an ambulance.

and to thetoastking, it happens in Europe too. Stupidity is a human trait, it doesn't matter what side of the pond you live on.

WOW! Usually when you call 911 they ask what is going on. They are trained to ask what the emergency is and not tell people to quit cussing.
Thats pretty messed up. The Cop knew he was wrong that's why he called for medical to her place. Knowing if he did not he would be in worse trouble.

that is one incompetent cop. Fair enough, getting snotty with someone, inappropriately, on an emergency call deserves a suspension. Putting someone's life at risk coz he is in a bad mood, that deserves a firing (considering he runs around all day with a gun).

But a policeman making up his own laws!!!!

For feck sake, they are granted power by a sovereign people that they might protect those people. For making up his own laws, he deserves jail.

This is a look into the future.

Everyone is so goddam sensitive these days. We are training our kids to be pussies and to cry when someone utters something that might hurt their feelings. The politically correct crowd are going to destroy America - they've already severely weakened our unique identity.

So who gives a rip if the kid swears? Jesus Christ. That arrogant cop is a pussy and probably drinks his own spoo.
