In the UK it is The Big Issue, not run by any 'faith' crap. But, don't just buy one- look at the seller, smile at them and speak to them. Then actually READ it. Buying a magazine may make you feel better, and may give the seller a few much needed pennies, but treating them like the real live human being that they are will mean an awful lot. If you see the same seller regularly- make sure you know their name!! |

The content of these rags varies from state to state, province to province and city to city (I have only North American experience, I can’t speak globally but I’m certain it is similar) Sometimes the rags are driven 100% from local faith organizations looking for money to stuff their coffers, and mostly these organizations use the poor and lost “souls” to gain profit from. I would suggest everybody at least ONE TIME, buy a homeless rag and read it. Faith will never cure or mend the situation, only progressive real caring individuals that do it for the right reasons. REAL contributions can be made here. A lot of people really do need help and a large sum of the disenchanted roaming the streets are mentally and physically ill, drug and alcohol addicted. PART ONE:
I did that, beard and all! Had nothing left to own and nothing left to give. Strange, it was one of the best times in my life, I'm not kidding...it is a long story though...I digress.These magazine/flyers contain information on local politics and how the MAN is fricking with the homeless and other topics involving law and what jerks are up to to remove these OH SO TRAGIC People from your streets. The magazines discuss shelter, food and clothing and all the associated bla bla bla. In most cases, the "homeless" person is given a "bundle" of magazines for free to sell on their FIRST try. Then they have to purchase the magazines from there on, @ 50% of the retail value. So if the rag sells for a buck, the seller gets $0.50. If you give more $$ then the "homeless" person keeps the surplus and pays only for the magazines he picked up from the publisher.

I think a lot of it is people and their trust.
They think these homeless people might possibly just be ripping them off. there are so many corrupt people taking advantage of sympathetic people. I had a kid come to my door the other day selling magazines. I talked to him for a few and I admit that I was really unsure of him. Then my fiance came to me afterward and was saying don't talk to them they are just trying to see into the house to see if we have anything worth stealing. so its our paranoia that makes us not want to help them out.

I was homeless for under a month so I had enough money that I could afford food. Later on when I had a home but was still broke though, I moved on to 7p pasta and stock cubes, and survived off that for about 2 months. The entire variety revolved around changing the flavour of stock cubes, and sometimes swapping to rice. Oh and we added butter sometimes. After a while we were able to afford meat again (Turkey is cheaper than chicken when it's not the holiday season), and stuff like that. My financial situation has gone from:
Worst: Homeless, total life savings of about $2000.
Best: 7 bedroom mansion in Dubai, with maid, driver, pool. (Parent's place though, not mine). And ups and downs all the way. Just like people to know it's possible to bring yourself up from anywhere. (My parents in turn were raised on a council estate and a farm in Iran before their place in Dubai). |
