Mom is how Irish people pronounce it. At least, I think it's Irish people. Watch Harry Potter! At one point one of the characters says, "Me dad's a muggle, mom's a witch." It's not solely American... I think it might have been brought over from Ireland. And by the way, how sad is it I can quote Harry Potter from memory? |

it's actually mam
it comes from the latin word MAMACHVLO, but mam sounds too much like ma'am so to avoid confusing some outer towns began calling it mum and then that caught on somehow. Don't ask me how though... crazy brits. |
