Sunday, February 01, 2009 2:58:35 PM "Did you actually read my post? Well, let me break it down for you...."Yes.. I wasn't criticising your logic. From what I hear US and UK is pretty comparable. So Im working on that assumption - But you risk life for your job - how can you decide what is enough pay for that? I'm in the forces too, I don't complain about my pay, I know its good, I know the perks are fantastic, and I love my job - but when I walk straight in to my nice job as a commissioned officer, and 18year old kids are getting paid nearly half what I'm paid, and have contact for days on end - i know its not enough, regardless of the fact that theyre earning and saving more than they would on civvi street. In relative terms, its not enough IMO. |

Saturday, January 31, 2009 4:12:01 PM Well when I was in the military (af) the pay was pretty good. It is not great when you first start off, but most people have to start living in the dorms anyway. And when you live in the dorms you have your food and shelter taken care of, so you would just mainly have to worry about buying a car. And when you move out of the dorms they give you money for housing. Right before I got out my base pay was $1900 a month +$1400 for rent (tax free) + $200 for food + $300 in cola (money for living in a high cost area. When I got out I still live in the same area, now I get by with only about $1500 a month. But still it is nice to know I do not have to worry about deploying I can just do my 40 hours a week and go home. |

Saturday, January 31, 2009 3:39:22 PM ""I tell my Marines this kind of stuff often. They think they don't get paid enough."And I bet theyre right.." Did you actually read my post? Well, let me break it down for you. Even Corporals bring in enough money to live comfortably. With free medical and dental care, plus 30 days off paid vacation time per year, plus every holiday including some holidays that even the school systems don't give... and most weekends off from work... there is very little room for much complaining. If a person in the military is complaining of money issues, they are screwing the pooch themselves by living above their means... or they may be very junior in rank with little to no good mentoring. Does this clear it up for you?

Saturday, January 31, 2009 12:24:10 PM I tell my Marines this kind of stuff often. They think they don't get paid enough. I tell them some of the worlds most percieved big shots make less money than you... because they owe or spend more than they make. I tell them, stay out of debt or keep your debt-to-income ratio low and you will always be more valuable then some celebrities. That's been a huge probelm in the last 30-40 years. Both formal and informal educators (teachers, colleges, parents) do not teach people early what money really does in real life. What good is economics if we don't teach consumers how to be effective consumers? |

Saturday, January 31, 2009 11:16:17 AM What about Donald Trump? He made his money back by whoring out his family's name to investors, but he lost even more. At his lowest point: He owed 900 Million Dollars personally, and his businesses owed 3.5 Billion dollars. |
