Wednesday, May 18, 2011 3:35:21 PM .... incidentally I know I noticed this 2 years too late... Overmann: "I am of the opinion that they should have done less, such as not transporting and protecting suspected child abusers" Saying as it'd be horrifically unfair to argue when you're possibly never going to see this, I'll just say I agree, though it's an oversimplification of events. |

Friday, January 30, 2009 12:15:33 PM Ew I just watched this guy yesterday on Oprah. Random. They never talked about any of this though as far as I can remember. Honestly it's the religions fault that things like this happen, because it forces men who are gay to stifle their true selves out of shame. Obviously though that kind of repressed life ends up exploding in their face. (or in a lot of cases an innocent altar boy's face... sorry I had to). |

Friday, January 30, 2009 12:04:58 PM "struggle with homosexuality" Nothing makes me sadder than when people try to change who they are because some stupid mind-controlling cult told them that they are wrong.

Friday, January 30, 2009 10:08:50 AM Please don't lump all "religious leaders" under the same heading. 'When you say what's wrong with religious leaders?' in relation to what one or two are doing, it's unjust. I hate it that there are jerks who claim to be christians that are living a lie, but not all religious leaders are bad. The media only shows the bad ones. |

Thursday, January 29, 2009 9:35:21 PM "Organized religion is an institution for earthly things. Don't expect anything other than earthly interests from them. A true religious life need not cost a dime."I felt the need to repost that because it's so true. |

Thursday, January 29, 2009 9:21:11 PM "I try to be a very open-minded person.I really try. But damnit, the Evangelicals are making it difficult!" The handful of us that make the news are... those of us trying to live normal, helpful lives aren't really. Maybe if we reach into semantics and say the church is terrorists etc., but in a practical sense, I probably don't make anyone's open-mindedness more difficult. I hope. |

Thursday, January 29, 2009 6:36:33 PM "What's going on with religious leaders?"Remove the notion that religious leaders are somehow inherently more moral than the rest of us and you'll see. "As an organization, the Catholic Church should have acted sooner and done more." I am of the opinion that they should have done less, such as not transporting and protecting suspected child abusers. |

Thursday, January 29, 2009 6:02:28 PM Davymid: I agree they deserve more scrutiny than anyone else. That is utterly different from falsely stereotyping priests as pedophiles. It is entirely appropriate that Ted Haggard is called on his sexual harassment charges. What I find inappropriate is "What's going on with religious leaders?" One is useful scrutiny of people in power, the other is negative stereotyping which helps hide actual pedophiles. Estimates at RT are that 1 in 20 priests are pedophiles (technically hebephiles). Estimates at my other link suggest 1 in 8 regular males are. As individuals Ted Haggard and his ilk need to be shunned and removed. As a group, the Catholic priests are *more* trustworthy. As an organization, the Catholic Church should have acted sooner and done more. These are three separate issues. (P.S. I only used Catholics specifically because I found Catholic stats more easily). |

Thursday, January 29, 2009 5:41:11 PM vv "You need to be shocked and disgusted at the scale of sexual abuse, not with "religious leaders" who fare better than fathers and step fathers when it comes to abuse."To be fair Baal, your everyday father or stepfather is not appointed to his position for the advocation of upholding the laws of God, and of the Church, and of Christianity. These people are put in a specific position of trust. After all, if we can't trust God's representatives on earth, then who can we trust? It is right and proper that these people (religious leaders) should come under more critical scrutiny than your average male. They are meant to be the moral keystone of society, the proof that religion is founded in morality and that without religion we have nihilism and debauchery and blah blah blah. Tell it to the judge. |
