Friday, January 30, 2009 12:18:31 PM 2 hours!? That would be so infuriatingly slow! That guy must have had a lot of patience for the news... I remember using computers like that a long long time ago, not that I'm old or anything. |

Thursday, January 29, 2009 1:08:34 PM "And we're not in it to make money. We're, uh, probably... not going to lose a lot, but we aren't gonna make much either."MUWHAHAHA -- Little did they know that they were sowing the seeds for the newspaper's ultimate demise. I actually don't find it funny, really. It's just so ironic to hear this guy talk about how the internet will affect newspapers' bottom lines. It was also interesting how the older gentleman who had a computer in his home said that he could, "copy" the stories onto paper, instead of saying, "print" them onto paper. I dunno... I guess widespread use of that jargon wasn't in place at the time. Cool video. |

Thursday, January 29, 2009 10:41:00 AM I love the "informed opinions" here of everyone under 30... Personally, seeing the Radio Shack TRS-80 in the guy's house brought back some memories. They were the first computers in my high school's computer lab in 1981... we had two of them for a student body of over 2000... and there were only six or seven students in the school (myself included) that had any interest in them.At the risk of sounding like a crotchety old man anyone here under the age of 30 would be totally lost if you sat down in front of an old piece of hardware. You're spoiled by the ease of GUI, and a 300 baud modem would have left you curled up in a corner whimpering. And to try to end the argument once and for all, the first true precursor to the internet ARPANET went live in 1969. I believe it was limited to communication between UCLA and Stanford. Anoyone who thinks it didn't exist until the 1990's needs to get a clue. Through my high school's lab I had a VAX account at the University of Buffal |
