My father is a library director and I have to say that I am in full agreement with the library in this case. The library goes through the trouble of providing information for free as well as free use of its computers and internet. It doesn't have to cost anything but inevitably, people want to have their cake and eat it, too. My dad's library has roughly $30,000 in outstanding fines, a significant fraction of their budget. That's about a dollar for every patron they serve. Bottom line is you are entering an unspoken commitment to return whatever you check out within a reasonable amount of time, and agree to pay any dues (which are wholly optional) that you incur for keeping it past the unspoken contract time. We're not *giving* it to you, we're *loaning* it to you, so be responsible and turn the items in on time. If you can't do that, we reserve the right to call upon the district attorney. |

Okay so this is the system we have in place. She was (apparently) given plenty of notice, repeatedly, and when she didn't respond, it was given to someone who could do something about it, and so they did. She wasn't responsible, and this is the consequence.Kinda duh-duh when you think about it, how people would be amazed or shocked by this shows that they aren't really paying attention. |

The news report is false. She wasn't arrested for not returning library books. She was arrested for not appearing in court, violating a court order. If you look at one of the FOUR official notices she received (shown on the news report) it states that she has been fined $171 dollars. When you get a fine, you either pay it by mail, or you appear in court to contest the charges. She did neither. The charge is contempt of court. It's just like paying a traffic ticket. If you don't pay it, there is a warrant out for your arrest. This news report is such crap |

um...yeah...I'm amazed at the number of people who seem to think the library had her arrested. That's pretty dumb.A judge had her arrested after she blew off a court appearance. It had less to do with library books and more to do with failure to appear. Last I checked, judges take that sort of thing pretty seriously. Anyway...she ignored several notices and a court order. Basically, she stole the books and she got exactly what she deserved. |
