Tuesday, June 17, 2008 12:40:28 AM KMP: "Sounds like Space Quest. Remeber Space Quest?Kings Quest? Police Quest? Those where awsome. No need for a diskette to make those noises." Those games ruled. Still do, really. I have a 286 to play them on... Ahh, the memories of childhood. |

Monday, June 16, 2008 9:18:17 PM They revved the motor to different speeds, like if you listen to your cd drive when you pop a cd in it. They just fiddled with the speed comtrols |

Monday, June 16, 2008 7:02:36 PM flambore, doh, posted at the same time.Yes, I was thinking it was an amiga one, which I guess is the same thing... PC/modern floppy controllers dont allow the same level of control as those old ones.

Monday, June 16, 2008 6:57:28 PM Its done by writing low level software to alternately access specific sets of tracks on the disk. The rapidly moving disk head creates various tones (depending on how far apart the tracks are), which then resonate through the whole disk/enclosure.As you can imagine, it ruins the device pretty quickly, which is (one of the reasons) why they usually only do it on old or discarded stuff like floppy and (C64) MRM drives.

Monday, June 16, 2008 6:43:06 PM Hackers used to be able to do stuff like this with the old commodore 64 floppy drives. I wonder if this was one of them. They do this by programming the stepper motor to resonate at a particular frequency for each note. The commodore drives had a DOS you could program/hack. The 3.5" drives were the 1581's.

Monday, June 16, 2008 5:39:22 PM I've seen this done before. I can't recall exactly how they do it, but it's something involving manipulating the processor. I saw it done on a hard drive for the Commodore 64, I'm assuming because its hard drive was so loud. Awesome vid. Loved. |
