Maybe you should simply explain things to the child and take away the tools while she is at school and then give them back when she goes home. Since when is a hammer, a screw drive, and a few pebbles the equivalent of a bomb threat. America "sigh"

I will only say this the only people who give a rats ass about your "school record" are teachers. The rest of the world could not care less. When is the last time someone asked you about your elementary "school record?"

So as far as that goes my advice is do not sweat it.

Yes the principle was covering her own ass, and her explanation made about as much sense as a 3 dollar bill. What if someone came across the sharpened pencil she has, or the wire holding her notebook together. OR what if they had some Macguiver like kid and her was able to build a high explosive from some rusty nails and gum stuck under a desk?

I sent an e-mail and left my name and ph# at the bottom. Am 6:13am PST received a call from the district superintendent. He informed me that there was more to the story. For legal and privacy reasons he could not discuss them. However he assured me that what fox is reporting is not the truth, and that a hammer and screwdriver were not even involved, It was a parent who was angry and wanted EXACTLY the reaction from the public that she is getting.

Reminds me of the time my son ( seven or eight at the time) was suspended from school for wearing a rebel hat with crossed swords on the top because it depicted a deadly weapon. The kicker: the school mascot image was a screaming rebel, wearing the exact same hat and brandishing a sword. The Principal heard from me on that one.

I understand the principal's position. The danger is that some children might take away the girl's hammer and hurt others.
Even though the girl didn't intend to use the hammer in a dangerous way, the hammer still has the potential to hurt children.
I can't judge whether or not a 3-day suspension was appropriate. I think a simple warning might have been enough.

ridiculous. That child now has a record because of that idiot head mistress? if i was her mother i would be fuming. The head mistress should be suspended because that was totally inapropriate and it brings the competancy of her judgement into serious question.

"An honor student in highschool got suspended once for bringing an aspirin to school."
Look out! He's got an aspirin and he's not afraid to use it! He'll kill us all!

What the drat? I heard of aspirins being banned in the States before, but I never got why. Anybody?

Oh, and I've got enough sharp stuff in my pencil case to take over a small third world country, scalpel, home-made slingshot and all. I also brought a dull swiss knife to school once, mostly for the other tools, and the only teacher that cared said something about the law being dumb, and that he'd prefer to have a pair of scissors than my knife to defend himself. End of discussion, he let me continue to play with it while he continued the course.

I was so outraged by this that I sent an e-mail to the principal. Also, it really disturbs me that a woman supposedly in charge of the education of children used the word "acrost." What an idiot!

wow, what happened to being taken into the principle's office and getting a stern talking to. i know i used to get them, and cry, and never thing about disobeying whatever it was again. take the "weapons" from here and have them for her mom to pick up. give her a written referral, make her write an essay even, but suspension? and police? come on.
in 4th grade i was actually into geodes too. i guess it's a good thing i only brought them in after i had smashed them. . .

This was retarded. The girl seemed to be a little slow the way she was saying "I like the shinies..." I used to love geology and what not as a kid, too. I used to buy books on rocks and have a rock collection (lame, I know) but I never once just wanted to bust open a rock. It seems like she was doing it more so just to bust something open than the rock itself.

and I know this has been said before but I've no problem repeating someone...

OK, so now it is illegal for children to be curious or to study geology in school. This is just another example of political correctness overriding common sense. What a wonder teaching opportunity this principal missed, using a students natural curiosity is a valuable teaching tool. Shame in the principal, the school and it's administrators.

Stupid drating idiots...

That little girl was interested in Geology without even knowing it. She was looking for Geodes...
And they treat her like she was going to shoot up the school. How retarded is that? "OMFG YOUR LEARNING! GTFO!"
