you never think something like this would happen so close to where you live, but when it does, it just hits you with the force of a train... what sucks is i too know people who attend NIU and i never imagined them to be in any sort of danger until this happened... i guess nowhere is safe anymore....

PandaLoMein: "A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths are a statistic." I used that quote two years ago in my English class, but I don't think anyone understood it. It still holds true today, which is the real tragedy. This is the message I was trying to convey, but I completely forgot about the quote.

Standards: No apology needed, we were just stating our conflicting opinions.

Irony...
And sorry to Piroteknix for my comment earlier. I wasn't in the best of moods.
rollingwit, however, isn't acceptable.

People, get used to this. I want to say that we are all responsible for these incidents. Even though they might have been joking, the couple of people toward the beginning of the comments who said this guy was missing hugs were probably the most insightful commenters. This is everyone's problem.

I was a bit surprised to find myself feeling anger at the dude who was being interviewed. His attitude was detached in a way that isn't like shock/trauma. How could anyone attending a large university in these times be completely unaware of a huge amount of suppressed unhappiness and violent urges on campus? It's not possible. Most of us are guilty of looking down on others and avoiding those who are already too alienated.

Of course civilian and military terror are related. All violence comes from the same place: outside of love and belonging.

Thank you for tolerating my rant. I saw this on the news on the way to work this morning and I'm still processing strong feelings it caused.

; he was Vice-President of the NIU Academic Criminal Justice Association in 2005 and had written on the U.S. correctional system, specifically prisons.

The most recent update says that there are 7 people dead, including the shooter. And there are 16 others injured. A few of them that have been confirmed when they died:
* Daniel Parmenter, age 20, last of Westchester, Ill.
* Catalina Garcia, age 20, last of Cicero, Ill.
* Ryanne Mace, age 19, last of Carpentersville, Ill.
* Julianna Gehant (pronounced Ghee-hant), age 32, last of Mendota, Ill.
* Gayle Dubowski, age 20, last of Carol Stream, Ill.
NIU officials have confirmed that the gunman has been identified as Steven Kazmierczak, age 27, of Champaign. He is a co-author of the academic paper referenced in the Tribune article, "Self-Injury In Correctional Settings: "Pathology" of Prisons or of Prisoners?". Kazmierczak was a graduate student at the School of Social Work, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who had received the NIU Dean's Award in 2006

this isn't like it but something happened at our school a little while ago that just was so sad and shocking..

one of the kids was so stressed out by school and home life, he was driving himself to do something nasty..

his family were constantly bickering about who got him and pupils at our school were always taking the mick out of him..

he was a nice kid...kept himself to himself, sat at the middle-back..

he had brung a 10" knife in his bag and was waiting for someone to annoy him..

one kid decided to go up to him and call him "a dirty paki"..that is when he pulled the knife out..he was in my lesson, so i saw it all.

the kid just freaked out started shouting "there is no way out! there is no other way!"..

he pulled out this big knife and cut the bullys throat, killing him..he then turnt the blade on himself..

everybody in our school thought it was all thier fault, but i have realized in time, we just need to treat each other with respect... R.I

posting once in a forum: normal
posting twice in a row on a forum: acceptable in circumstances
posting thrice in a row on a forum: 0_o
posting thrice in a row purely to insult: go die in a fire

But seriously, this is a major social problem isn't it?

I couldn't imagine being in that classroom with a guy shooting at me. Enough about me though. I wish to give my condolences to those hurt, the families, and the people who knew them at the university.

Why don't these losers just kill themselves and leave everyone else out of it. They want to be remembered for something? The event itself is tragic of course, but what is almost as tragic is that now, every news program across the country is going to broadcast this guy's name and picture to the world, just like he wanted. If I had my way the media would be prohibited from broadcasting or publicizing the killer's name in any way, shape, form, or fashion. I say remember the victims, not the scum.

-wow b-hazard, you certainly are "the man"

will you be shooting them with your failgun?-

I'll shoot em with a stapler if I have too.
I made the decision not long after columbine that if I ever find myself in this situation I'm not going to be one to live or die crying under a desk while some psycho gets exactly what he wants in everyone just sitting around waiting to get shot.

You know this stuff is happening too often when you think "oh no, not another one". By too often, I mean it shouldn't happen at all, but these days it seems to be more than once a year!

F-You Charlton Heston and the NRA! When the founding fathers said "Right to bear arms.", they meant muskets not semi-automatics. Also the country was mostly just farms and wilderness then. When are these republican jag-offs going to realize that everything written in a 200 plus year old document must be taken in the context in which it was written. These are the same idiots who think the bible was true.

You hippies go on believing "banning" guns is going to make us any safer while I drop 5 in the sternum of the guy who almost made you a notch on his barrel.
