The race is actually called a 'Hound and Hare', one or two balloons go up and land somewhere else in town. The other Balloon are trying to throw a bean bag as close to that landing spot as possible. All the pilots only have vertical control, so they must get into the correct thermals to move horizontally. It's very impressive what they can do |

You notice how many went up, only to come down a few hundred feet away and melt down? Well, obviously the time-lapse made it looks like a melt, but that's a lot of balloons that seems to have problems or give up rather quickly... I think I'll walk. |

Cool to watch. As I understand it, balloon "races" are about navigation and accuracy more than speed. Not quite sure how it works though. |
