Friday, January 11, 2008 5:53:54 PM alright the blue part of the flame in the part that's going up (layman's terms) is the hottest part, not the tip of the flame but the tip of the blue part, its what we use to stretch out glass tubes for spot marking, and has been said the cotton isn't burning the fuel (lighter fluid, oil, alochol....whatever) is.... whoa, i sound preachy |

Friday, January 11, 2008 4:44:16 PM I'm back. It worked great! The only problem i cam across is that after 20 seconds or so, it gets HOT. Perhaps alcohol burns hotter then lighter fluid? I do not know, but be warned it DOES get hot. |

Friday, January 11, 2008 3:21:40 PM I just put my finger in the blue part of the lighter flame, I had to touche it in order to get burned. But thats the lighter, I think it'd be different with only a ball soaked from fluid. |

Friday, January 11, 2008 3:13:03 PM this would work just fine without buning you. as a kid, i remember that i used to spray hairspray on my hand and set it on fire. it would not burn me untill the fluid was all burned up. the same principle applies here. since he does not have his hand soaked in any kind of flameable fluid, he has to move the ball around a little so that the fire does not burn him. uisng different flameables will have different results depnding on how hot the flame can get, and how quick the flame will burn through the fluid. if you try this, i would suggest using lighter fluid, rubbing alcohol, or nail polish remover since they all have relatively low burning temps. nail polish remover tends to burn up quicker though. if you are going to try this for the first time though, have a friend around just in case!!!! |

Friday, January 11, 2008 2:59:56 PM as long as there's lighter fluid remaining in the ball & string, neither will burn up. Just like lantern wicks, eventually it will be consumed, but it's a slow process. |

Friday, January 11, 2008 2:46:13 PM Just wanted to say, THIS WORKS! I went and cut up an old cotton sock, I used some brown thread and soaked it in tiki-torch oil. I havent tried holding on to one but the ball itself dosent burn at all. |

Friday, January 11, 2008 2:09:34 PM it does work... been at parties where guys soak tennis balls in lighter fluid and toss them around... they're nuts.it makes a really cool sound, like a jet engine. also, at least with the tennis balls, they dont bounce normally... the end up stopping about 50 feet from where they should after hitting the ground |

Friday, January 11, 2008 1:36:23 PM Dynamics of the flame are pretty interesting. I remeber in Russia we actually had to learn all different parts of a flame... Anyway, the reason he doesn't get burned is because he never lets it stay in one spot for more than a couple of seconds. It's still hot, mind you, but not quite hot enough to burn at the bottom. What's hot in a fire is the gas that is produced. Because it is a hot gas it is lighter than air and due to laws of density keeps moving upward. That is why the top is hottest. At the bottom gas goes around the sides and up, so most of the heat never touches the hand. Also, the reason you can close your hand around it to put out the flame is as your hand closes, you briefly wave away the hot gas and cut off oxigen needed for the burn. Just make sure to keep your fingers joined as you do it. I blame all the "ooh's" and "ahh's" on America's poor education system. |
