To deadman, I doubt it. I don't know much about the properties of electricity but I'd imagine the movement of the bolt would resemble the path of the electrons which can be described as random at best. Look up the Uncertainty Principle.

I thought of the same thing as well, but the bolts seem to corresponds with the Uncertainty Principle, in that different sounds present the bolt in certain definable regions (such as striking the rod, ground and air).

Plus you can't forget about naturally occurring charged particles in the environment. That would definitely attract the bolt as well.

Ok... If this was real wouldn't one note correspond to a general shape of the bolt?

Congratulations twinkletits!

You've just earned yourself a place among the ranks of people who don't have a clue about how electroacoustics work!

I cant believe how many people fell for that, that was not real and that is not how tesla coils sound when they zap ive been near them live and they make a loud noise even when they are not zapping... those got quite in between zaps so it was not really playing the mario tune.

The reason why people use old 8-bit game music for science demos like this one is rather simple: old NES music had only two of the 8 bit-channels of computing power devoted to sound, and those channels could only do one instrument at a time.

What makes the old NES themes especially memorable is their simplicity, and what made them good for the programmers is that they were designed to loop.

If you go and listen to the Tetris theme through shalar's link, you'll hear a *lot* more noise from the coils because they are trying to process multi-timbral audio signals, and it's difficult to do with a 1-bit Pulse Code Modulator like a Tesla Coil. It's like trying to play your mp3s through the PC speaker you have plugged into your motherboard pear the power pins.

Were I to do the Tetris thing, I would have used 4 coils to allow for the harmonies.

Seen several musical tesla coils before, but these ones have a really nice sound, much cleaner than many others but still obviously electrical.

Plasmasonic (youtube it) have some really awesome ones, they've got to the point where it sounds just like a regular speaker.
