Tuesday, October 09, 2007 6:57:54 AM huh.. IMO that theory is kinda worthy!i'd say the appendix used to be a lot bigger so many 100's n thousands of yrs back when man ate bark, plants and leaves etc. and it was used to help breakdown all that crap. then over yrs, fire was created, meat was cooked, no more bark so the appendix wasnt needed so through the evolution it jus shrunk. so yeah it could contain good bacteria to help with the digestive system but jus doesnt need to be as big. |

Monday, October 08, 2007 12:49:27 PM Actually the apendix used to be used for when we were only herbivores and didnt eat meant....it was used to help digest the grass...but now we eat mainly man made crap and meat...we dont need themalso its been proved that chinese and japanese people are less likely to get appedicitis as they traditionally drink and eat more herbs than anywhere else in the world. |

Monday, October 08, 2007 9:57:26 AM I had always heard it was important a long time ago to help with the digestion of diffeent kinds of leaves and veggies we used to eat. |

Sunday, October 07, 2007 11:12:27 PM I am having a bit of trouble digesting the statement from the article that there are more bacteria than human cells in the typical body. That sounds awfully bizarre."Of course everything has a purpose. Guys, the human body doesnt just create something for the f*ck of it." I would argue that everything at least *initially* has a purpose but there are indeed such things as vestigial structures whose conditions for function are diminished or superseded over time and began to shrink so as to conserve energy. For all we know - this article notwithstanding - the appendix is one such structure. |

Sunday, October 07, 2007 8:36:30 PM What about wisdom teeth silverfyre? I sure as heck don't see a use for those, especially since they can cause serious problems with your teeth, gums, jaws... entire mouth, almost...Yes, we have parts we don't need. Why does the human fetus produce gills, just to lose them again in a few weeks? And not all scientists are atheists, to a question posted earlier. In fact, there are entire organizations of Christian scientists who attempt to disprove evolution all the time. Plus, this is not even a theory... Its more of a hypothesis. And as far as I read, the evidence they have for it is pretty scarce anyway... |

Sunday, October 07, 2007 5:53:00 PM Someone told me that the appendix was somewhat like an signal to tell you that you treating your body fine. If you don't have appendicitis, then you are most likely healthy. |

Sunday, October 07, 2007 3:20:49 PM Of course everything has a purpose. Guys, the human body doesnt just create something for the f*ck of it. The body doesnt sit there and think "Gee, I think I'll spend those extra stem cells I happen to have lying around and use up ALL ATP I worked so hard to get to make a little sliver of organ that is not going to have any purpose whatsoever."Right. Just because we happen to be able to survive without it; just because scientists dont know what the heck its for, does NOT mean it has no purpose. sheesh.

Sunday, October 07, 2007 12:14:36 PM appendicitis is believed to occur when theres an ulceration within the appendix, causing an invasion of bacteria.the bacteria multiply within the appendix. The appendix may become swollen and filled with pus (a fluid formed in infected tissue, consisting of while blood cells and cellular debris), and may eventually rupture. Signs of rupture include the presence of symptoms for more than 24 hours, a fever, a high white blood cell count, and a fast heart rate. Very rarely, the inflammation and symptoms of appendicitis may disappear but recur again later. In most cases, a blockage inside the appendix probably starts a process in which the appendix becomes inflamed and infected. If inflammation continues without treatment, the appendix can rupture. A ruptured appendix spills bacteria-laden intestinal contents into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis, which may result in a life-threatening infection. A rupture also may cause an abscess to form. |
