Thursday, September 20, 2007 9:15:23 PM ok first of all, that was not graphic. Second, thats how the FOOD CHAIN works. Orcas eat seals. That's how it goes. Killing whales is totally different than them eating. It's like saying, you're a human, so we won't kill you. But now that you area eating meat, we are gonna kill you. |

Thursday, September 20, 2007 12:30:45 PM dont tell me not to assume, when you assumed yourself that I meant "you" in the personal sense as opposed to the general sense. I wasnt sure myself whether dolphins and whales were classed together so I googled and found at least 10 (and no I'm not going to bother listing them here. If you're that interested, google will oblige you just as it did me) and not one of the sites I looked at could state categorically that dolphins ARE members of the whale family, nor did they state that they are NOT. They said that the argument/debate/discussion is still ongoing with no difinitve answer. And yes they are Delphinidae family, but Delphinidae are within the Cetacean order. So I still stand by my point. And if my post to you came across as sarcastic, apologies for that. It wasnt a good day. |

Wednesday, September 19, 2007 10:17:27 PM Maybe I missed your point because in your attempt to make me look stupid, you didn't make your point very clear. Orcas belong to the Family Delphinidae (which is defined as 'ocean-dwelling dolphins'). As far as I was aware this taxonomy isn't in dispute among zoologists. But you say there is an argument among them- I'd be very interested to hear a reference to such an argument so I can learn more. And no, I'm not being sarcastic, I really would like to know. And please do me the favour next time of not assuming I get all my information from websites/wikipedia or whatever...

Wednesday, September 19, 2007 12:40:26 PM Davy it appears that you missed my point too. My point was NOT that an Orca is a large dolphin as opposed to a whale. My point was that some modern day zoologists say all dolphins ARE members of the whale family. Other zoologists argue that they (dolphins and whales)are seperate from each other. I was trying to point out to all the people who were claiming as "fact" that orca are or are not members of the whale family, that there is NO definitive answer yet. I think perhaps you and I are discussing entirely different points here |

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 7:44:02 PM fifi, You obviously had some difficulty understanding what I said. Let me elucidate for you. I did not say anything about current zoologists being early taxonomists, neither did I say that they're confused. What I said was, animals have their names because the first biologists who named them tried to fit them into groups in which they thought they belonged based on anatomy, as they did not have the benefit of genetics back then. So the early taxonomists called the Orca a Killer Whale because it looks like one (which is fair enough, it does look like a whale). We now know better (i.e. it's actually a big dolphin), but we're stuck with the name Killer "Whale". Other examples Tasmanian Tiger (not a tiger), Civet Cat (not a cat), etc etc etc. I thought some people might find this interesting. Obviously you didn't, and decided to "have a go" for some reason. Can only assume you were bored (why else would you be on here, right?)

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 12:59:54 PM So Davy, current zoologists on just about every website you go to are early taxonomists? You should go lecture them with your expertise, coz they're apparently still confused and dont go around making sweeping statements that they're not whales. However, they are all cetaceans. And Imnogod, you dont think them showing harrowing images of the orca feeding isnt an effort to make the orca look bad? Grow up. And guitarluvr86 - seal clubbers kill seals for profit. Orca do it to eat. Nice work comparing them to each other. |

Monday, September 17, 2007 8:45:25 PM I repeat, from an earlier post of mine: Killer Whales are not whales. They're big dolphins.Just because they were classified as whales by early taxonomists who didn't know better at the time, don't necessarily make it so. Same way as the Koala Bear is not a bear, the Red Panda is not a panda, Prairie Dog is not a dog, and a Turtle Dove is not necessarily part turtle. To take taxonomy ad nauseum, the Sea Lions they prey upon (shock!) are not lions. Just as Killer Whales (shock!) are not whales. Crap. |

Sunday, September 16, 2007 10:09:12 AM firstly, to the idiot who said "pandas kill too" - pandas are vegetarians!! That means they dont eat meat! secondly, whales & dolphins are all cetaceans and many zoologists still debate whether dolphins are actually whales or not, so nobody here is correct in assuming they are correct on their classification of the orca thirdly, the orca IS also known as a "killer whale" finally, how lame for one activist group to slate another endangered animal just to promote their own! You're the fool here. They weren't "slating" another endangered animal. It was creative advertisement, designed for the purpose of getting laughs in order to get new supporters. In my opinion this was nothing short of brilliant. |

Sunday, September 16, 2007 12:50:28 AM First of all: Is this a real commercial for save the pandas? Second: If it is, then its a horrible one. it's very stupid to deflect attention from one species of animal in order to save an other. it defeats the purpose of saving any animals. Fact: Whale feed on seals. So that is no "rampage". More like a feeding frenzy. P.S. Ever seen a cow get killed for our consumption? |

Sunday, September 16, 2007 12:25:18 AM Oh. My. God.

I didn't know they could get that close to the shore!Hahah, but seriously. How lame. They try to promote their own panda-saving business by making the "save-the-whales" movement look bad? Selfish and stupid. Bad move. |
