Lol at the tree thing...

I don't believe it for a second...

I love how he was all "now, with two slits it should act like particles and make 2 markey things... WHAT?!"... Wacth it again and you'll see what im talking about...

this is a great example of duality and is about the best atemp i have seen at exsplaining it at an uderstamble level. good luck to everyone who trys to understand this as even some of the best scientist dont get it(infact i dont think any of them do), but so many people talking about it in a logical maner is good. pitty some people just cant manage it. p.s. im sure the should be a funny quote for duality but i cant think of one

The speed of electrons is not the same as the speed of light, by the way, because electrons have mass while photons don't (even though they're a particle), but, strangely, photons have momentum (that's why light hitting stuff heats it up), which is mass times speed. Photons have no mass, maximum speed, which should work out to a momentum of 0, but they have momentum anyways. There's an equation for this, but it's been 8 months since high school physics so I forget it.

the 'what the bleep do we know" trailer was very interesting. to me it proved even more that god exists because it showed that these particles are mere thoughts that control our ever being not complex dense material unable to think for themselves. these "thoughts" can decide what to do based on what they come in contact with or what they are told. it seems like something that a loving god would make us and the world around us out of.

I guess it just proves that some things just can't perform under pressure of an audience.

If you're interested in this, check out the Particle Accelerator work at the CERN labs in Switzerland - they accelerate particles to 99% of light speed and smash them together, creating NEW MATTER!

They're now building a 27km circumference accelerator which will use 1/10 of switzerland's power at full speed.

Hopefully, they will uncover the "Higgs Boson", aka the "God PArticle", aka the thing which makes gravity!! Hoverboards could become a reality guys!

Either way, Wiki it, its well interesting.

This blew my mind! Quantum mechanics is the X factor in science that means "Despite all your logic, actually, the universe does whatever the hell it wants!"

Good clip--VERY clearly explained. I wish we had watched THIS show in science class instead.

well its is a proven fact about blessed water having healing properties. and you dont need supreme people to bless it . just write on the bottle words like love and peace and the water takes on the properties of the emotion. i had my class support Dr Emotos theory on blessed water by taking 3 jugs of water. one marked love, another hate and another empty. we also took 3 sets of plants watering each group with one of the jugs of water. by the end of two months the plants watered with the hate water jug all died. the empty half died and the ones watered with the love water jug all grew 3 times in size. so how do you explain that, ask your teacher to prove his point before you go buying his opinion and its just an opinion that he is teaching,,,not a good teacher if you ask me, lets just believe what we dont prove or disprove..strange theory there

Basically the way us observing the electron effects it is that the photon of light we must use to see the electron with interacts with the electron due to it's negligable mass. This causes the electron to move from where it was going, thus making it impossible to know the position and directional momentum of an electron simultaneously. This is called the Heisenburg uncertainty principle, however the Schrodinger wave equation takes into account this uncertainty and can gives us a wave function for the position of an electron relative to the nucleus and makes it possible to plot the 95% boundry orbitals of an electron. As the probability of an electron being any distance from the nucleus is never 0. Simple really...

oh man i watched this in physics last year
i understand it too
basically by measuring/observing something, we are interfereing with it
ahh quantum physics...the worst part of physics i learned...

On page 2 sgdp asked if there was a way to display this than an animation.

An easy way to do a double slit experiment at home is to bounce a laser pointer off of a glass (it has to be glass) mirror at between a 45' to 60' angle.

If you do it right, you should see an interference pattern on the surface the laser reflects onto.

This is because the surface of the mirror and the back of the mirror will reflect at slightly different angles and emulate two slits that the same laser beam is going through.

You can also try to cut two slits in a piece of cardboard but they mush be no further apart than the width of the laser beam and is a pain.

I knew of this like... 2 years ago. the same thing happens with light. not just electrons.

Geek13: yes, my physics class did a similar thing last year, except instead of a neon light it was a laser.
The interference pattern "proved" that light was a wave.
Then the photoelectric effect "proved" that light was made up of particles

We never did the electron version of the experiment, I guess because this way they manage to teach us about the photo-electric effect and (wave) superposition at the same time. then use wave superposition to explain quantum superposition.

This clip is actually from a show called "What the bleep: Down the rabbit hole", part of the "What the bleep do we know" thing on BBC, some ideas are absurd, such as one idea which states that if a water droplet is blessed/cursed by some divine people and then frozen, the frozen droplet displays different visual properties when a different "emotion" is instilled into it.... "what a crock" as my physics prof politely put it.

ok this little cartoon is from a movie called
"what the bleep do we know " either that one or its newer version "what the bleep do we know, down the rabbit hole" its very enlightening a real eye opener. watch it if you get a chance it explains the concept of bending time, being in 2 places at one time. how to do stuff like Chris Angel does but for real to tricks. well worth the watch if you can handle the corny cartoon part of it.

My assumption is this: The particles are affected by gravity or other forces which make the individual particles follow a wave pattern. (Like the particle is "surfing" if you will.) This means that each particle is an individual, but because it is following the "wake" of a wave, it shows up in a wave pattern on the back wall.

They don't state the method in which the particles are observed, but I would assume that the observation method is tainting the results by distorting the wave (electromagnetic device?) and making the particles flow straight again.
